One of Netflix’s most successful show’s is set to make a highly anticipated return to screens with a second instalment this year. As fans eagerly await to discover the fate of their favourite characters, Jonathan Bailey who played Anthony Bridgerton unveiled his true feelings about replacing Regé-Jean Page.

Although Anthony was introduced in the first season as the eldest Bridgerton sibling, he was backseat to his sister Daphne Brigderton (Phoebe Dynevor) whom the series primarily focused on.

Season one followed her quest to find love and eventually marry the Duke of Hastings Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), who was also front and centre.

With the two married and stepping back, Anthony will step into the limelight and become the male lead romantic role in season two.

With a string of failed relationships, it was hinted that his love life would become a major storyline for him in the upcoming instalment.

Bailey spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his promotion to lead and becoming the focus of season two.

He revealed: “I felt super kooky and I don’t know if that’s necessarily unhelpful when it came to Anthony.”

The actor explained: “The one thing I’ve always remembered reading the script was like, ‘Well, this is someone who’s incredibly anxious, who can’t sleep at night and is struggling to even get through a meal.’ That felt quite right that I was feeling similar.”

After only seeking women for pleasure, Anthony promised Daphne he would be committed to finding himself a wife.

Season one saw Anthony’s spirits crushed after it was revealed his brother’s love interest Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker) who he was about to marry was, in fact, pregnant from a past relationship.”

Worst of all the news became the talk of the town after it was published in gossip sheets written by the anonymous Lady Whistledown, which brought shame to the family.

However, the true reason the pregnancy was exposed was because the anonymous blogger was actually in love with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and didn’t want him to get married.

In the shocking season finale, Lady Whistledown was revealed to be Penelope Featherington.

As she was best friends with Anthony’s sister Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), Penelope never dared to mention her crush.

However, Anthony was glad to see the demise of Colin and Marina’s relationship as he never approved of it in the first place.

When his brother came to him for his blessing in episode six, Anthony instead apologised to his brother for not taking him to brothels to gain sexual experience.

Anthony also battled with the idea of his younger brother having a better social standing as a married man, overtaking him as the man of the house.

Thankfully, Bailey had previously dropped a major hint about the fate of the character’s romantic life in season two.

As the new romantic lead, fans can not only expect one love interest for Anthony but two, which will get complicated as his lovers are siblings.

Entertainment Weekly reported: “When the Sharma family moves from Bombay to London, Anthony finds himself immediately pulled toward Edwina (Charithra Chandran), believing her to be his perfect match — until he finds himself attracted to Edwina’s sister, Kate (Simone Ashley).”

Bailey revealed: “You can understand why he’s drawn to both. And they’re both drawn to him in turn.

“It’s an interesting love triangle; it’s dangerous when it’s siblings.

“It’s bestial between them in a way season 1 wasn’t. They’re all animals with each other.”
