There was no shortage of drama in tonight’s Casualty as beloved, disgruntled former staff member Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson) returned his ID pass to the hospital just in time to find himself in the middle of an armed siege-type situation in Resus. That’s just typical of his luck.
Charlie is at heart the kind of person you want by your side in a crisis. He hasn’t been himself lately though, and he wasn’t himself when he encouraged an angry man, Mick (Owen Whitelaw), to not take no for an answer when it came to being allowed into the ED to see his injured son Connor.
To be fair to Charlie, he didn’t know at that point that Mick had a gun and his son had been injured running away from him after Mick had shot his social worker.
Things escalated pretty quickly and soon Charlie, Connie (Amanda Mealing), Dylan (William Beck) and Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) found themselves as hostages in Resus along with two wounded patients.
Charlie did his best to keep the situation calm and talk Mick out of doing anything rash, but then Faith decided to have a half-hearted attempt at stabbing Mick with a needle. Mick shot at her, Dylan dived in between them – and Dylan got shot.
A nation threw up its hands in horror, but even before the hands were lowered again Dylan’s injury was revealed to be only a flesh wound.
The main thing is it’s made Faith realise that Dylan is so besotted with her that he’d even take a bullet for her. Later he told her that, contrary to what she believed, he wasn’t afraid of commitment.
Indeed he could be very committed for the right person, he said – and Faith realised that he meant her. Who knows what might have happened next if her husband Lev (Uriel Emil) hadn’t come in to give his wife a relieved hug?
Meanwhile, when Connor’s condition became critical and he needed urgent surgery, Charlie persuaded Mick to let everyone else leave Resus along with Connor, leaving only the two of them behind.
They had a heart to heart and Charlie told Mick there was still time to make amends and he shouldn’t give up. Unfortunately just as everything seemed about to be going to end peacefully Mick got jittery as he gave himself up and raised his gun – and was shot dead by the police.
Charlie had been ragingly angry with Connie for most of the episode (Derek Thompson was excellent in these scenes), blaming her for the way she treated Duffy by using her as a scapegoat to cover her own drug addiction.
After events had calmed down the two of them had a talk. Connie told him she was haunted by her behaviour towards Duffy. ‘It is with me every day and I can’t forgive myself. Sorry’s not enough, is it?’
Maybe not, but the whole thing had made Charlie realise that he’d given up on his job too soon. Duffy would want him to carry on, after all. So Connie was able to announce to the assembled team that he’s going to be returning to work. Jacob (Charles Venn) will be hoping that this time Charlie will do more than hide in cubicles making beds.
In other news, when Will (Jack Nolan) found out from Ethan (George Rainsford) that Fenisha (Olivia D’Lima) had terminated her pregnancy he wondered whether they might be able to get back together.
I don’t think this reflects very highly on Will as a person, but Fenisha did seem to be tempted afresh by his easy-going Irish charms. The problem is, of course, that she is still pregnant. So she told him she’d moved on and he wandered off, leaving her gazing sadly after him.
