Christine Lampard was partnered with Matthew Cutler when she appeared on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Despite her initial fears of letting down her partner, who won the contest the year before, she came in fifth place after being eliminated in Week 11. The TV star, who rose to fame on ‘The One Show’ alongside Adrian Chiles, revealed her concerns over being an “embarrassment” and “particularly bad” on the hit BBC show.

Christine hoped that her “feet would do the talking” on the show in a jump from her comfy role on ‘The One Show’ sofa to the ‘Strictly’ dance floor in 2016.

The Northern Irish star, whose surname was Bleakley back then, feared the “beginning on this crazy journey” and admitted to hoping for a less favourable dance partner.

She said: “If it’s someone who did incredibly well last year I’ll feel a bit of pressure because you don’t want to let them down and embarrass them by being particularly bad.”

When Matthew Cutler walked in to greet her in the dance studio, she screamed “Oh my goodness” before her anxiety levels peaked.

Christine said: “I’m more nervous now because it’s you, so nice to meet you. I’m so sorry.

“I’m going to apologise in advance, yeah I really am, oh god, I’m going to let you down.”

In an attempt to quell her concerns, Matthew joked: “That’s what I like – positive thinking.”

But her fears were somewhat justified, when the dancer revealed he hoped to break a ‘Strictly’ record by being the first to win the show’s Glitterball Trophy twice.

He added: “That’s my goal, that’s what I really want to do, so this could be the year.”

Later, while Christine was having her costume altered she expressed additional concern about how she looked.

She said: “You’re making this shorter than it originally was… trying to get my legs out, which is something I don’t do even when I’m on a beach in a bikini.

“I’m the first one to get up and cover myself up with a sarong and be quite conservative.”

Christine, who married Chelsea football star Frank Lampard in 2015, admitted she felt her views on clothing and not exposing her skin were outdated.

She quipped: “I’m 28, I’m old enough to vote, buy a house, drink, do whatever I want to do and yet I still worry whether my dad will think my skirt is too short.”

The star confessed to feeling intimidated when she posed alongside other celebrities in a preview for the show.

Christine added: “The day that we all met there was Lisa Snowdon, Jodie Kidd and Rachel Stevens.

“I just stood there like this big awkward angle nuisance in the middle of them all.”

Her dance partner Matthew revealed it was his goal to coax Christine out of her shell.

He started: “Christine is a bit shy, a bit scared of everything at the moment, so that’s my job to show the world what a diva hopefully she’ll be.”
