Coronation Street fans were all for Yasmeen Nazir finally standing up to her abusive husband Geoff and pleading not guilty in court.
Yasmeen was sent to jail for attempted murder after attacking Geoff and fans had been waiting to hear her plea in court, after Monday night’s episode left on a cliffhanger.
Viewers saw as Yasmeen (played by Shelley King) pleaded not guilty in court, much to the surprise of her lawyer, who hadn’t conferred with her beforehand.
The episode later saw Yasmeen fretting over whether her decision to plead not guilty was the ‘right thing’ to do, while Geoff (Ian Bartholomew) was left looking worried that he could now be exposed.
Taking to Twitter, fans rejoiced in Yasmeen standing up for herself against Geoff and said they were looking forward to the character getting his long-awaited ‘comeuppance’.
‘Can’t wait for Geoff to get his comeuppance #CoronationStreet,’ tweeted one viewer.
‘Yasmeen pleading “not guilty” has made my [year] tbh #coronationstreet,’ said one viewer.
Another said: ‘Anyone else whole family just cheer hearing Yasmeen pleas ‘not guilty #Corrie#CoronationStreet.’
Others were pleased to see that other characters on the cobbles were finally starting to suspect Geoff, including his son Tim’s partner Sally Metcalfe.
Viewers saw Sally tell Tim that she no longer wanted Geoff staying in their house, following Yasmeen’s not guilty plea, and that Tim had to be the one to tell him.
‘Good for Sally, she’s slowly putting all the pieces together. #Geoff #Yasmeen #Corrie #CoronationStreet #itvCorrie,’ one viewer posted.
‘#CoronationStreet #corrie Love how Sally is spilling the truth tea to Tim. She’s not stupid like Tim and wants that fake scum Geoff out. Brilliant she sees rat-faced Geoff is playing the victim and she’s not buying it,’ another agreed.
Yasmeen had previously opened up to her granddaughter Alya about how Geoff has been treating her and went into detail about how he tested her with red crosses around the house, the excessive cleaning tasks and the punishments that would follow if she failed.
Alya had then asked if Yasmeen would deem such behaviour by Geoff normal if he had acted the same way with a young Tim — and Yasmeen was unable to answer.
Coronation Street continues Friday 12 June at 7:30pm on ITV.
