Coronation Street return of familiar face and romance with unlikely resident

Coronation Street: The Barlow’s interrogate Peter

Coronation Street is set to see the return of Tommy Orpington (played by Matt Millburn) after being away from the cobbles since 2016.

Tommy first arrived as a Weatherfield County footballer, who befriended Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine).

He made further sporadic appearances over the next few years and was last seen in 2021 when he retired from his footballing career.

Now, the Weatherfield football star is set to return to Coronation Street but under largely different circumstances and for a much longer stint.

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod recently spoke to Express.co.uk and other press about Tommy’s return and what is to come over the next couple of months.

He explained: “You will see him on Christmas Day since leaving football has made some bad business investments.

“Not the least of which was opening a Tommy Orpington-themed gourmet burger restaurant which has been established on screen but they have all gone belly up.

“His wife has left him and he has had to return to the trade he had before he was a none-league footballer which was a painter and decorator.

“You would think given all that he would be quite miserable but he is not at all he is very accepting of his lot, he finds the act of painting and decorating quite zen.”

“He is in a good place when we find him but as I noted, he is now single and it might be one of our female characters that needs some decorating done,” he added.

“So there is basically a story that evolves where this attractive successful man arrives into one of our female characters’ lives and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion shall we say.”

Iain admitted that viewers would be able to work out quite quickly who the female in question is and is excited for that surprise.

He added that whilst the the storyline is funny, it has some elements of being “quite sad” in some places and will kick off a bigger storyline over the next 12 months, with Tommy “coming off of the subs bench”.

Could Jenny Connor (Sally-Ann Matthews) be in for a new romance with Tommy? Or is Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) finally ready to move on?

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
