Countdowns Rachel Riley likens Anne Robinson to a headmistress

Countdown: Rachel admits she hasn’t solved maths problem

Rachel Riley first joined Countdown back in 2009 when she took over from Carol Vorderman who announced her exit from the popular puzzle show after two decades.

Now a staple on the Channel 4 programme, Rachel has seen four hosts in the hot seat including Jeff Stelling, Nick Hewer, Anne Robinson and now Colin Murray.

However, when speaking about her time alongside the former Weakest Link presenter Anne, the 37-year-old confessed she wasn’t keen on how she approached the role.

It’s believed the duo clashed during Anne’s 13-month Countdown tenure with speculation Rachel wasn’t pleased with the presenter’s demand to have her own make-up artist and stylist.

Although Anne was the first female to host the quiz show, she stepped down in order to spend time with her family.

Speaking about the show since Anne’s departure, Rachel admitted viewers have noticed a difference.

She told MailOnline: “Anne was a lot more headmistress style and that suits some people, and some people enjoyed it.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that I am enjoying working with Colin a lot more.

“She’s been in the industry a long time and she knows what she wants so she decided to leave and good luck to her, but Countdown is not really about us.

He said: “I have been a fan since day one, been part of the family for over a decade, appearing on Dictionary Corner, and now I get the honour of guiding it into a fifth decade.

“However, I just don’t want Countdown to survive, I want it to thrive.

“During my caretaker stint, we’ve seen more people tune back in, with close to a million (900,000) watching the series final in December, and I want that to just be the beginning.”

Countdown is available to watch on All4.
