The lowdown on Richard and Harriet from Married at First Sight

“The show is about taking four couples in crisis away from their everyday lives to Thailand, then switching each person with someone from another couple and exposing them to experiences they wouldn’t have in the real world,” explains the show’s relationship therapist Lee Valls.

“After two weeks, they decide whether to make up or break up with their real-life partner.”

Like a cross between Wife Swap and C5’s Make Or Break, the experiment does seem rather extreme, but Lee, 39, insists the couples could see no other option.

“They were desperate and wanted their relationships to work so badly,” he says. “It’s intense and surreal, but it’s therapeutic and helps them heal.”

Each of the new pairings moves into their own villa – where they’re banned from contacting their real-life partner – and the first challenge each duo face is that there is only one bed.

“This is done to see how they negotiate with their experimental partner,” explains Lee. “It all depends
on their boundaries and how much they trust their real-life partner too.

“We do various exercises, including making them act out a transcript of an argument they’ve had with their real-life partner with their partner from the experiment. It’s really powerful.

There were quite a few falling-outs and even walkouts.”

And do romantic sparks fly between any of the new pairings?

“There is some chemistry between the experimental partners,” Lee teases.

“I was also surprised by some of the ultimate outcomes, particularly with two of the couples and their decisions about whether to stay together or break up…”

Seven Year Switch, Tuesday, 9.15pm, Channel 4
