BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt warns ‘don’t give the actor the drill’ as DIY SOS host Nick Knowles reveals health and safety hell during Christmas special.
On Saturday (December 16), the 61-year-old broadcaster welcomed viewers back to the news program with his co-star Naga Munchetty. The presenting duo discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines including the impressive line-up of shows set to grace the airwaves this Christmas.
Fans can expect to see a glamorous Christmas special from Strictly Come Dancing which will feature Breakfast host Sally Nugent herself. Also on the airwaves will be the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who starring the fifteenth doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa.

Another festive special set to air is DIY SOS, where the usual band of builders renovate someone’s house by means of thanks after all their good deeds to the community over the years. This year, the team were joined by the star-studded cast of EastEnders who did their fair share to help transform one lucky viewers’ home.
Joining them on the famous red sofa was the host himself as he recalled the fun-filled episode in the heart of Harlow, East London with the cast of the BBC soap. Charlie cheekily began with: "As I understand it you had the EastEnders cast involved.
"Was there a kind of health and safety regulation that said, 'Don't give the actor the drill?' Were some people frankly not safe around stuff?"
The TV presenter, also 61, chuckled: "Some of the skills were questionable but that didn't stop us. Perry Fenwick came along because Billy [Byrne], who's our electrician who everybody loves, it was his wedding anniversary.
"So he had to disappear for a couple of days – there was no way of avoiding it. So we got EastEnders' Billy in instead.
"We handed him an electrical screwdriver and let him get on with it, which was quite interesting." It was at this point that Nick was forced to retract his joke because "the health and safety people are gonna kill me."
He admitted: "That's not actually true. What we did do was give him a massive wacker plate – which is a massive piece of machinery that basically compresses concrete or anybody that gets under it. So he went off with that and he looked absolutely terrified, so it was quite good fun."

Later on in the interview, the broadcaster revealed that the famous electrician actually used to work on EastEnders before he joined the team on DIY SOS. He revealed: "Billy our electrician actually used to be a lighting electrician on EastEnders before be came over to DIY SOS.
"So it was a real full-circle moment [for us]." Fans will be sure to pass round the tissues for the emotional Christmas special as the dad-of-four teased the new instalment is one of their best yet.
