EastEnders Shona McGarty received a terrifying death threat from mystery fan

EastEnders star Shona McGarty revealed she was sent a terrifying “death threat” in the post by a fan.

The BBC star has played the role of Whitney Dean since she first joined the show in 2008 and has been adored by fans ever since.

But it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Whit with the loveable character facing a number of devastating storylines on the soap.

Throughout her career, her character has killed her ex-boyfriend, had a broken marriage to Callum Highway and most recently had a heartbreaking miscarriage with Zack Hudson.

Last weekend, Shona was nominated for Best Leading Performer at the 2023 British Soap Awards for that emotional episode but sadly lost out to her co-star Danielle Harold.

After years of working on the soap, it’s fair to say viewers can take difficult storylines quite hard, but the brunette beauty revealed exclusively to the Daily Star how one fan interaction went too far.

When asked what one of her weirdest gifts from a fan was, the actress recalled one time when she was sent an electric drill in the post.

She said: “I was sent a Black & Decker drill once. I phoned up my dad and I said, ‘Dad I think this might be a death threat’ and he went, ‘Oh is it any good?’

“He joked, ‘I’ll take this death threat and put it at the top of your skull and take a couple of pictures’."

Luckily, the star didn’t receive any more death threats in the post, but her doting dad made sure to put her unexpected gift to good use.

Shona added: “So I mean, it was fine, I'm still here to tell the tale. It's actually a pretty good drill, my dad’s taken it and done some DIY around the house.”

The actress later hinted that her character may take a dark turn following her heartache which could see her turning to the wrong side of the tracks with TV gangster Phil Mitchell.

She explained: "I'd love her to be a villain but I don't think Whitney has it in her, but Whitney could front for Phil.

"I think she could be a runner for Phil because you'd never suspect which is the nicest part, she would go totally under the radar."

The British Soap Awards aired on Tuesday at 8pm on ITV1 & ITVX.
