EastEnders spoilers: Sharon Mitchell locked in ‘custody battle as Michelle Fowler returns’

Sharon Mitchell (played by Letitia Dean) tragically gave birth to her second son while her eldest, Dennis Rickman (Bleu Landau), died and the grieving mother failed to bond with her new baby. After weeks of struggling, Sharon gave Kayden to his grandmother, Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) but when the EastEnders stalwart returns to the Square she may have had a change of heart.

In recent BBC scenes, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) was devastated when Sharon announced she would be going to Australia to clear her head.

The dodgy dealer wanted to give their marriage another try and revealed his plans to buy the Queen Vic.

However, Sharon explained how much her son’s death had affected her and he couldn’t be replaced with a big gesture.

Sharon has gone Down Under to stay with Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell) and her daughter Vicki Fowler (Scarlett Alice Johnson).

Michelle knows only too well what’s like to be estranged from your child and could persuade Sharon she’s making a mistake with Kayden.

It’s no secret that Michelle isn’t a fan of Phil and Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) revealed that he and Michelle conspired to stop Sharon and Phil’s wedding in 2014 before changing their minds.

Michelle last left the Square in 2018 as she vowed to reconnect with her children before travelling the world.

EastEnders fans have since learned she is living with Vicki in Australia but her relationship with Mark Fowler Jr (Ned Porteous) is strained.

Mark turned up in Walford for a brief stint in 2016 where he discovered Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) was his father.

He was persuaded by Sharon to stay away from Grant and returned to his mother and his step-father Tim in America.

When Michelle returned to Walford later in the year, she told Sharon Mark had moved out with a girlfriend.

It’s later revealed Michelle had an illegal relationship with a 17-year-old student and her son no longer talks to her because of it.

Despite Michelle’s vow to reconnect with her children, the disgraced teacher would be able to tell Sharon how hard it is to be estranged from your son.

Considering the huge mistakes she’s made in her life, Michelle may decide the time is right to return to Walford and help Sharon bring up Kayden.

Meanwhile, Karen was overjoyed when Sharon asked her to raise her son and willingly agreed to move away from the Square.

After spending so much time with Kayden, Karen could fear Sharon’s sudden interest could result in her being cut away from her grandson’s life as the grieving mother wants nothing to do with Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

Express.co.uk spoke to Kiran Beeharry, a partner in the family law team of SA Law, to find out if Karen would be able to fight Sharon for custody of Kayden.

“Grandparents bringing applications in respect of grandchildren is a rare occurrence. Grandparents typically need the permission of the court to bring applications in respect of grandchildren,” he explained.

“If a grandparent raises concerns over a parent’s ability to care for a child, this is more likely to prompt an investigation by social services who are more likely to step in and try and help Sharon first.”

Will Sharon return to raise baby Kayden or will Karen be forced to leave Walford to start a new life with her grandson?

EastEnders continues Monday on BBC One at 8pm.
