EastEnders Tommy Moon lashes out at Phil Mitchell over Alfie cancer diagnosis

Shane Richie teases Kat and Alfie Moon reunion

EastEnders Alfie Moon (played by Shane Richie) is still hiding his prostate cancer diagnosis from his nearest and dearest.

However, it is becoming increasingly difficult as spoilers released by the BBC for next week’s episodes show.

While a select few including ex-wife Kat Mitchell (Jessie Wallace), Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden ) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) are aware of what he is going through, most of Albert Square’s residents, including his children, believe that he has had all clear.

But next week his son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) has his debut boxing match and he is expecting Alfie to be there.

As he frets about whether or not Alfie will turn up Phil promises him that he will be there.

In an attempt to keep his promise to the child, he heads to the hospital, where Alfie is recuperating from his prostatectomy, intending to bring him to The Boxing Den.

Unfortunately, Alfie is still struggling after the operation and is in bad shape and admits that he can’t go to the fight telling Phil he needs to recuperate in Spain.

This puts the Walford hard man in an awkward position as he knows he will have to explain to the youngster why Alfie can’t be there.

He confides in Kat as he tries to figure out the best way to break the news but unbeknownst to the pair of them Tommy overhears.

Realising that they have been withholding the truth from him, angry and hurt Tommy lashes out at Phil and calls him a liar.

Viewers saw Alfie receive his heartbreaking diagnosis last month in a storyline that has seen the BBC soap work alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw explained: “When we first embarked on this storyline we knew it was imperative that we worked alongside Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support to take on and accurately portray such an emotional and pivotal storyline for Alfie, and one that many viewers may relate to.

“Shane has thoughtfully portrayed the realities of being diagnosed with prostate cancer with grace and understanding.

“We hope that this storyline resonates with the audience and that we represent it as sensitively, and as accurately as possible.”

EastEnders is on BBC One Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm.
