Being a huge star, Elvis Presley could only really go out in public when it was dark, renting out whole fairgrounds and roller-skating rinks like the Rainbow Rollerdome. But one of his favourite activities was going to The Memphian movie theatre to see the latest films as often as every night for a week or more. Back in 1973, The King caught horror movie Th
During a Q&A on his YouTube channel, Elvis’ cousin and Memphis Mafia member Billy Smith remembered: “We went to see it at the movie theatre. He liked it. One of his favourite parts was when her head turned all the way around. He started laughing and he said, ‘I wish I could do that! That way I could look all the way around me when I got ready.’ And he also said it looked like a hoot owl [being] able to move its head that far round”
Billy’s wife Jo went on to explain how The King would deal with horror scenes and shared the star’s extraordinary reaction to Jaws.
Jo reckons Elvis would laugh at scary things as a defence mechanism, so as not to actually be frightened by what he was seeing on the screen.
She said: “He would find humour in anything though. I think sometimes he did that because… not to get too deep into it [so that it didn’t] bother him. He would just laugh and it and it was kind of funny!”
On seeing another famously terrifying movie in 1975, they said: “We went to the Whitehaven Plaza to see Jaws. When a new movie came out, Elvis always got it and we’d go to the movie theatre to see it. He loved Jaws. He thought how many people it would feed! But he didn’t eat fish.”
It’s true. The King found the smell of seafood cooking so disgusting that he banned it from Graceland.

According to the mansion’s records, Elvis enjoyed a varied selection of movies in May 1963 from Village of the Damned and The List of Adrian Messenger to Harold Lloyd’s World of Comedy and The Nutty Professor. The latter he saw three times over the course of just 10 days.
Three months later and Elvis watched Oscar-winning documentary The Sky Above, The Mud Below, Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson’s The Terror, plus Hootenanny Hoot helmed by his Kissing’ Cousins director Gene Nelson.
A year later in the summer of 1964, the star saw biblical epic King of Kings and then Dr Strangelove, which fast became one of his favourite movies, five times.
During Christmas 1965, it’s recorded he watched the Peter Sellers comedy yet again, alongside Cleopatra and Sean Connery James Bond movies Dr No and Thunderbolt. And then to celebrate his 31st birthday a few weeks later, he went to see the comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World at The Memphian.
