In what appears to be more than just a coincidence, the United Kingdom will be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 by a contestant called Sam in Italy, for the second time.
This year’s contest is set to take place in Turin and will see the United Kingdom represented by TikTok sensation Sam Ryder with his song Space Man.
In March, Scott Mills announced the exciting news on BBC Radio 1, pleading with fans to ‘get behind’ Sam and forget about the UK’s track record at the competition.
Sam is originally from Essex and started posting on TikTok in March 2020 during the first Covid-19 lockdown.
He quickly blew fans away with his gorgeous covers of songs from artists like Adele, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson and now has a whopping 12million followers and close to 100million likes on the platform.
However, this isn’t the first time that the UK is being represented at Eurovision by a contestant called Sam.
Taking to Twitter, the BBC’s official Eurovision account said: ‘#ESC22 will mark the 2nd consecutive #Eurovision hosted in Italy where we have sent an artist called Sam!
Throwback to 1991 when Samantha Janus represented the UK with A Message To Your Heart.
This year, the semi-finals of Eurovision that are taking place on Tuesday, May 10, and Thursday, May 12, will be broadcast on BBC Three and be available on BBC iPlayer.
The Grand Final on Saturday, May 14, will start at 8pm and be available to view on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Fans will also be able to catch the competition on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
