Below Deck Mediterranean season eight teased by Bravo
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Below Deck Mediterranean.
Lara Du Preez has been labelled the breakout star of Below Deck Mediterranean this time around so who is the new lead deckhand?
Following Ruan Irving’s departure as bosun, Luka Brunton was given the title with Lara and fellow deckhand Haleigh Gorman stepping up to help him out.
But it was Lara who really went above and beyond to assist Luka, delegating tasks to new deckhand Max Salvador and working well with Haleigh when he wasn’t around.
So it was an easy decision for Luke to promote Lara to lead deckhand which she clearly appreciated going by her emotional reaction.
She later explained: “I was really taken aback. Like, it’s always been my dream. I even have a goal board, or whatever you want to call it, and on it was like ‘I want to be a lead deckhand.’”

New lead deckhand Lara Du Preez was brought up in Hermanus, South Africa and so far has four years of yachting experience under her belt.
On the show, she emphasised her lifelong passion to Haleigh, telling her crewmate: “I’ve been wanting to do it since I was young.
“I’ve always been like surfing and in the water. And I want to become a captain, so I was like ‘This is the best way to become one.’”
It was also during an early episode of Below Deck Med season eight that Lara opened up about her sexuality.

“It was actually in quarantine when I realized [for] the first time that I like women; I don’t like men,” Lara said.
“As soon as I came out and really felt comfortable with that I was like, I have wings to fly.
“Like, ‘OK Lara, you can accept yourself completely for who you are.'”
She believes her special skill is “fixing things” and when she isn’t sailing the seas, Lara likes to work out, socialise and “improve my deckhand skills”.

While Mustique may have looked impressive from the get-go to Below Deck Med fans, Lara thought it was “dirty” and “desperately” in need of cleaning when she arrived.
Nevertheless, Lara has continued to work hard and is truly passionate about working her way up in the yachting industry.
She added: “I’ve lived a very rocky life; I’m a f**king crazy horse, but something clicked in me as soon as I started yachting, and I can’t believe that my dreams are literally just coming true.
