Mean Girls writer Tina Fey has confirmed that the stage show is being made into a film.
The comedian and 30 Rock actress, 49, revealed that her hit Broadway musical adaptation of the iconic 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls is due to get a big screen adaptation.
In a statement to Variety, Tina said: "I’m very excited to bring 'Mean Girls' back to the big screen."
She added: "It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences.
"I've spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly."
Additionally, Paramount's president of production Elizabeth Raposo commented: "We’re thrilled to be bringing this iconic property back to the big screen in musical form with our incredible filmmaking team."
The musical is set to open on London's West End next year following its Tony-nominated production running on Broadway from its premiere in 2017.
The original Mean Girls film starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Haron, a previously home-schooled student who joins a high school for the first time and goes undercover with the ruthless popular girls known as The Plastics ( Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert).
However, Cady soon finds that pretending to be one of the group actually starts to transform her into one of the mean girls herself.
It remains to be seen who will be cast in the film adaptation of the musical.
A cast reunion anyone?
Naturally, the devoted following of Mean Girls have taken to social media to share their thoughts.
One wrote on Twitter: "Ok so a mean girls musical movie is happening and everyone wants the original cast to play and sing in this movie and tbh, even tho they are a bit older now, this would actually be the funniest ever LMAO"
Another tweeted: "If they put James Corden in #MeanGirls The Musical: The Movie, I riot."
Meanwhile, a different fan noted: "the movie mean girls was made into a musical for it to be made back into a movie…"
Elsewhere, one tweeted: "No one wants a mean girls musical the movie…"
Finally, one wrote: "The funny thing about them turning mean girls the musical into a movie is that the musical is based off the movie. So they are basically doing a mean girls remake but with songs. Well I still watch it? Hell ya I will."
