Game of Thrones: What happened to Mance Rayder?

The HBO show came to an end earlier this year, airing its eighth and final season but many of the show’s plots and unexpected twists from previous series are still being discussed today. So what happened to Mance Rayder played by actor Ciaran Hinds in Game of Thrones?

What happened to Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones?

Like many of the characters in GOT, it did not end well for the King-Beyond-the-Wall

In the popular fantasy series, Mance was leader of the Free Folk and a feared opponent of the Night’s Watch which he had previously served.

He held the position bestowed on him for more than a decade and was a very important and proud figure.

However, this would later lead to his downfall.

After the defeat of the wildings at Castle Black, Mance remained a prisoner of Stannis (Stephen Dillane).

Stannis asked Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) to convince his prisoner to bend his knee for him and help in his quest to get the North back from Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton).

Despite Jon’s efforts, Mance refuses to kneel before anyone even when he is confronted with death.

Mance is given one final chance as he is taken to the pyre but yet again, he refuses.

As his punishment, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) denounces him as the King of Lies before setting fire to the pyre which he is tied to.

Clearly terrified at the thought of being burned alive, Jon decides to put him out of his misery.

Instead, he shoots him through the heart with an arrow, bringing an end to his suffering.

For his final scene, Hinds had to somehow find the right balance between dying with dignity and scared to be burnt alive.

Speaking to Esquire, he said: “The idea between Michael Slovis, the director, and I was to find the degree between what will be shown and the degree to which it hurts and how much a man will tolerate.

“In the end, Mance says it in the scene, he’s embarrassed. I’m going to die but I’m embarrassed by how I’ll appear: a failed, sad, frightened thing.

“When someone says ‘pretend you’re on fire,’ I certainly have a tendency to overact.

“And then you have to make it internal and pretend it’s not hurting, but it is.

“You have to see what comes out on the camera. So you must trust the director. If it needs to be brought up or down. Michael was clear about what it was.”
