The BBC One drama has been available to watch as a boxset since it made its debut in mid-November, but for those watching the series each week the wait has been far from worth it, with viewers complaining about a lack of action, twist, and a slow pace.
In the concluding episodes of the drama Benjamin Greene (played by Ben Barnes) was set to marry Julia (Julia Ormond), when she discovered a concerning fact.
In his youth Benjamin had been convicted of killing a shopkeeper.
Not the “something old” you’d want on on your wedding day.
Understandably, she called off the wedding – only for a confrontation with Ben to reveal he had covered for his sibling, who was a legal adult and therefore open to a more serious sentence.

This revelation mollified Julia, who came to terms with the fact that Ben had hidden this devastating truth from his past.
Although, to be fair, it’s not something you would immediately share on a first date.
As for Ben’s suspected motives for marrying Julia, who happens to be three decades his senior, he sought nothing more than lasting love.
There was very little dirt under Ben’s fingernails by the end of the series, as the amount of gold digging appeared to be minimal.
For a series with such a provocative title, which had encouraged viewers to be suspicious of his motives for so long, the finale was rather a let down for a portion of the audience.
The very notion of a happy ending seemed incredible to some, as Ben and Julia prepare for a life of marriage together, without him rooting through her drawers (so to speak) for her valuables.
The conclusion seemed to alienate some, who had been expecting far more drama.
One viewers tweeted: “The first 5 episodes were great, what happened to the finale. Felt like I have wasted 6 weeks.’

Another found the ending frustrating, although the ambiguity of Ben’s final smile did have an effect: “Very unsatisfying ending. I still don’t trust him an inch.”
One viewer, however, was thoroughly annoyed by the lack of gold digging or treachery: “What was the point of that? What a waste of time!”
The lack of bloodshed was also a contentious point for another tweeter: “6 weeks, 6 WEEKS I’ve sat here waiting for somebody to be murdered and nothing! Absolutely nothing. “
For many, this sentence might have summed up how they felt after six weeks: “I feel like a gold diggers victim right now. Empty and let down.”

However, there were those who thought the happy ending was a refreshing change to the usual mayhem.
A viewer praised the finale and the show’s depiction of a relationship between a younger man and an older woman.
“Loved loved loved this ending. So glad he turned out not to be a golddigger. And so refreshing to be able to have a successful relationship between an older woman and a younger guy and to get a happy ending, quite unusual these days. Well done.”
As yet, the BBC hasn’t confirmed if there will be a second series of the drama.
Gold Digger is available now on the iPlayer.
