The nominations for the 77th Golden Globe Awards are being announced this morning and will surely reshape the conversation around the 2019-2020 awards season. The nominations come from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which is made up of approximately 90 journalists from around the world. Golden Globe film contenders include top Oscar prospects “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” On the television side, Emmy winners “Game of Thrones” and “Fleabag” are once again in the mix, as are “Succession” and “Big Little Lies.”
The Golden Globes awarded “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Drama) and “Green Book” (Musical/Comedy) with its top two film prizes in 2019. The latter went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The four acting Oscar winners Rami Malek, Olivia Colman, Mahershala Ali, and Regina King all won Globes first. The Globe winner for Best Director was Alfonso Cuarón, who repeated at the Oscars. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” also won the Oscar after picking up the Globe for Best Animated Feature. The top television prizes went to “The Americans” and “The Kominsky Method.”
The Golden Globe nominations are arriving after Scorsese’s “The Irishman” picked up Best Film honors from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle last week. The 2020 Golden Globes will be hosted by Ricky Gervais. The awards ceremony takes place January 5, 2020.
