Nicolas Cage has landed the role of a lifetime, or rather, of his lifetime. In his new movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage plays “Nic Cage,” an aging, highly neurotic former movie star on the brink of obscurity. (Sound familiar?)
Before retirement, Cage (the character) accepts one final deal from a billionaire super-fan (played by Pedro Pascal) who asks that Cage attend his birthday party. As it turns out, the billionaire super-fan is a mob boss, and his birthday party? Pure chaos. The fearless character Nic Cage is forced to use his tired movie star films to escape and steal the declaration of independence (OK fine, not that last part).
This movie can only be described as camp, and to truly understand what is going on here, we must remember that Nicolas Cage (who thrives in memes and internet irony) was once an A-list movie star. With this project, Cage and director Tom Gormican wanted to “take the reins of [his] narrative and become a big piece of performance art.”
If your “narcissist” red flags are flying, we feel obligated to tell you that this movie was not actually a brainchild of Nicolas Cage. In fact, the actor was a bit hesitant when approached by Gormican but ultimately was down for a little ~performance art~. Here’s how to watch the end result:
Where can I watch The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent?
Fans of Nic Cage can catch the ironic comedy exclusively in theaters starting April 15 (aka TODAY!) with a wide release slated for April 22. You can buy tickets through Fandango or at your local movie theater (like the good ol’ days). If your theater doesn’t have tickets just yet, wait until the wide release date on the 22nd before complaining!
Will The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent be available to stream?
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is only available in theaters right now, but fingers crossed it hits a streaming service before the end of the year. Until the studio announces it and the movie completes its theatrical run, though, it’s hard to say for sure if/when that’ll happen.
