Insecure has kept fans glued to their TV screens since its 2016 premiere. Created by Shorty Award-winning writer Issa Rae, the show follows best friends Issa Dee (Rae) and Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji) as they navigate life and love in Los Angeles. On the surface, it’s a simple story, but the writing and characters have fleshed it out into something of its own.
Viewers were devastated to learn that the upcoming fifth season will be the last, but there’s also hope that the show will continue on in another form. Given its success, it seems possible that Insecure could very well earn a spinoff or even a movie. But will it? Here’s what actor Kendrick Sampson had to say when asked about the possibility of an Insecure spinoff or movie.
Kendrick Sampson talked ‘Insecure’ and a possible spinoff in an interview
Sampson, who plays Nathan Campbell, talked to Entertainment Tonight about a possible spinoff earlier in March. He said that while he’d be open to the idea, he so far hasn’t been told of any plans to continue the show.
“As far as I know, this is the end. But I also know that people bring up movies — I think Breaking Bad came back with a Breaking Bad movie after the last season and stuff like that, Sex and the City,” he said. “So I think there’s a possibility. But I think from what I’ve heard, this is the end.”
While this might come as sad news for some fans, Sampson promised the show will at least have a really good sendoff. “I can tell you it’s gonna be dope. It’s gonna be really dope,” he continued. “Funny.”
‘Insecure’ Season 5 will solve a dilemma for Issa
You might remember, Season 4 of Insecure left off on a dramatic note for Issa. After getting closure on her situation with Nathan, she resumed her relationship with Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis). But more drama kicked up when Lawrence revealed in the finale that Condola Hayes (Christina Elmore) is pregnant and keeping it. It was hard news for Issa to process and could be something that causes them to separate for good.
“Now [she’s thinking], can I still have what I want even though it may not look like how I want?” showrunner Prentice Penny previously told Entertainment Weekly of Issa’s thoughts about her future with Lawrence.
It remains to be seen if they stay together, but Ellis has said he hopes they do. “It is one of our great love stories. I do believe that. I hope they make it work,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I hope people don’t give up on them because of this, because I think love in general is a bigger thing than that … so I hope people will at least give them the benefit of the doubt and let them get there and let them figure out what’s best for them.”
Insecure Season 5 is expected to premiere later in 2021. Don’t miss it.
