Dan McKee and Matt Jameson have announced that they’ve split amicably, two years after meeting on Married at First Sight UK.
Dan, 28, and 40 year old Matt were matched up on the sixth season of the reality show, which recently delighted fans with a Christmas reunion, and made history by becoming the first same-sex couple to appear on the show.
Dan, who made the announcement on December 11, was quick to reassure the couple’s fans that there was no animosity around the decision.
In a statement on his Instagram, signed off by both of them, Dan wrote: “we have been on an incredible adventure together the last two years and we have given ourselves every opportunity to make things work as a couple, but over the last few months we have realised that we are actually better as friends.”
He went on to clarify that whilst the decision to split is “never easy,”, things remain “amicable,” between the pair, adding that: “There’s nothing but love and good energy between us.”
Matt and Dan met for the first time at their mock wedding, which took place during the sixth series of Married At First Sight UK.
Fans of the show followed their journey as they then headed off to Mexico to start their honeymoon (and their relationship.)
The couple were met with some teething problems right away when Matt realised how attached Dan was to his native Northern Ireland and they ran into more difficulty when they were forced to delay their return from honeymoon.
This meant that Matt and Dan missed a few episodes in the series, with Matt later revealing that the mysterious delay was down to a positive coronavirus test.
However, the couple eventually rejoined the show and quickly became fan favourites.
By the end of the series, despite living so far apart, Matt and Dan decided to make a go of their relationship – to the delight of their avid viewers.
Since then, fans of the show have been able to keep up with their relationship through social media.
In October 2022, the pair revealed that they had finally decided to close the distance, with Matt confirming that he had swapped his city life in Leeds to move into an apartment with Dan in a small seaside town in Northern Ireland, Portstewart, where they run WildBay Retreats.
Dan and Matt only recently took a cruise break around Central America in November 2022, with Matt describing the trip as an “incredible week.”
On November 8, the pair both took to their Instagram accounts to post about a prostate cancer fundraiser they were doing together, so for some fans it does seem like the split came as a surprise – and even some of their former co-stars weighed in.
Nikita Jasmine commented that it was “sad news,” and that Dan and Matt had been her “favourite MAFS couple.”
Marilyse Corrigan also added that she was “so sorry to hear this,” and described both of the men as “incredible people.”
