The Jurassic World trilogy continued the story introduced in Jurassic Park. While it has many nostalgic moments and homages to the original Steven Spielberg movie, it is not a reboot or a remake of the original. The director of Jurassic World Dominion, Colin Trevorrow, believes that remaking Jurassic Park would be a mistake and he pities the person who would be assigned that task.
‘Jurassic World Dominion’ is the final chapter of the new trilogy
Jurassic Park kicked off the franchise in 1993. Based on the Michael Chrichton novel, the Spielberg film introduced audiences to characters like Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), while also providing some incredible visual effects for the dinosaur. The franchise lost some steam with its subsequent sequels, but it was saved from extinction by Jurassic World.
Jurassic World introduced fans of the franchise to a fully-realized version of the park that John Hammond wanted to create. However, Chris Pratt’s and Bryce Dallas Howard’s characters should not have ignored the results of the original park. Still, Jurassic World made over $1 billion at the box office along with its sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Dominion is the third film in this trilogy and is also wrapping up the franchise as a whole.
Director Colin Trevorrow believes remaking ‘Jurassic Park’ would be a mistake
While Jurassic World Dominion is being labeled as the finale of the franchise, that doesn’t make it absolute. If the movie does well and Universal decides to push forward, it is unclear what direction they would take. This could include just rebooting the franchise as a whole.
Director Trevorrow, who directed the first Jurassic World and the latest entry, does not think a reboot would be a good idea. In an interview with Collider, Trevorrow says that the only way to reboot the franchise would be to remake Jurassic Park and he doesn’t believe anyone can match the 1993 Spielberg movie.
“This is just my own personal opinion. One of the challenges of this franchise is that to reboot it, you have to remake Jurassic Park. And I weep for whoever takes that on, because that is one of the greatest movies ever made. And so I think in a lot of ways, our only choice is to move forward and to expand. Because going back there and redoing Spielberg and Crichton, best of luck.”
While Jurassic World did have similarities to the original movie, there were new characters and a unique atmosphere that made the franchise appealing again to a new generation.
Is ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ the final ‘Jurassic Park’ movie?
Dominion is being labeled as the final chapter of this franchise. Considering how successful these movies have been Universal, it’s doubtful that the studio doesn’t try to figure out some way to tell new stories within this universe.
Trevorrow is right that any director would have an almost impossible job in creating another Jurassic Park movie that holds up in comparison to the original. Still, studios are often so concerned about whether or not they could, that they never stop to wonder if they should.
Jurassic World Dominion arrives in theaters on June 10.
