Berlin (played by Pedro Alonso) has been one of Money Heist’s most popular characters since the first season introduced them to the charismatic thief. However, the creators have now admitted they faced some barriers getting him in the show – here’s what you need to know about this.
Why was Berlin almost removed from La Casa de Papel?
The fourth season of Money Heist was released on Netflix earlier in April for fans to binge eight new episodes.
Once again, the new part of the show featured the beloved character of Berlin back in a number of flashbacks.
For fans, he has been a major part of the series since the first season introduced the charming and at times psychopathic heist member.
Therefore, many were left devastated when the character was killed by the police in part two.

But the creators have now revealed Berlin was in danger of not being in the Spanish show at all.
In a recent documentary made to accompany the show on Netflix called Money Heist: The Phenomenon, creator Álex Pina spoke about this.
He revealed: “Someone said to me, ‘This character doesn’t fit with the times. You should take him out of the series.’
“I said I had no intention of taking him out of the series.
“He’s a misogynist, narcissist and psychopath in many ways.
“But we could have a character like that in the series and the audience could freely decide whose side they’re on, right?
Pina went on to say how he thinks Berlin’s inclusion in the show is actually part of the appeal of the series.
He added: “If television is bland it’s boring because less things happen.

“The audience wants things to happen, and there’s nothing better than a villain who we can empathise with.”
During the documentary, Pedro Alonso also discussed the popularity of the character and where this could come from.
The star said: “People need to get their heads checked because I’m sure he’s not the character you’d want your daughter to marry.
“[But] that dominant side to him, his leadership, repulses us but it gives us a certain sense of safety.”
