Good Morning Britain was back on ITV with the midweek instalment and it was the last time Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid were presenting this week. Joining them for an exclusive interview live in the studio was London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, to talk about the ongoing issue of knife crime and Susanna referred to weather presenter Alex Beresford to explain the tragic situation his family found themselves in when his cousin, Nathaniel, was stabbed to death.
Susanna said: “You’ve talked about our personal experience, Alex Beresford, our weather presenter,” before turning to him and continuing: “You have the most raw personal experience of this.”
Alex spoke directly to Sadiq and explained: “It feels like there does need to be more done, particularly in London. I feel like you could be more vocal on the issue of knife crime.
“It’s not just about saying all the right things it’s about doing the right things as well. And Sadiq, we’ve known each other for a little while, we were part of the Reach Role Model programme, back when Labour was in power, I was lucky enough to be picked as one of the role models that was put together because there was a recommendation for the need for a network of national black role models.
“That was unfortunately taken away when Conservative came into government.

“There needs to be more done in the community. I agree with lots of things that you’re saying, there needs to be more done. We’ve got young kids walking around with knives, carrying them out of fear – that’s not an excuse to carry a knife, but it is a reason for it.
“And it’s because our communities are completely infested with several different things – so many different disadvantages,” he remarked.
Susanna was then heard asking from across the studio: “Alex tell us how it has touched your family.”
Alex continued: “I mean, words can’t describe what it’s like to lose one of your cousins to knife crime.
“And unfortunately Nathaniel [Armstrong] isn’t the only person I know who has lost their life to knife crime.
“It cuts you so deep inside literally and there’s not a week that goes by and I don’t walk around the streets of Britain these days when someone comes up to me and say ‘We’re so sorry what happened to your cousin, we’re so glad you spoke that day on Good Morning Britain.’
“I wish it could change, this is an uphill struggle and it’s not something we are going to fix immediately,” he added.
It came after Susanna explained how knife crime offences have “risen to a new record high with over 115,000 offences”.

“Why are we not doing enough? Why are you not doing enough to save our teenagers,” she probed.
The London Mayor explained: “City Hall is working with the police and the NHS and we have seen a decrease over the last year – it’s not good enough we are not complacent.”
After clarifying he had been in his role for “three and a half years,” he pointed out other areas of success under his reign: “As well as the continuing decrease in knife crime, moped crime is also down by 50 percent.”
