Mrs Brown's Boys star 'one month from heart attack' but saved by chat show

Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O’Carroll opened up about escaping death thanks to an appearance on Ireland’s The Late, Late Show during today’s Lorraine.

The 64-year-old was just weeks away from heart failure after surgeons found an artery which was 99 percent blocked when the comedian initially sought to be consulted about his legs.

Brendan was speaking at a press conference to celebrate the first year of the Mrs Brown’s Boys FAI Heart Care Programme, which aims to tackle Sudden Death Syndrome, back in 2017 where he was introduced to FAI Medical Doctor Alan Byrne.

After failing to get an appointment in Florida where Brendan now lives with his wife Jennifer Gibney, Byrne managed to pull a few strings and get the actor in for a check-up the following Friday.

Brendan insisted he was reluctant to queue-jump, however after several tests it soon became clear action needed to be taken immediately and Brendan was put under.

‘It was like something out of ER where he walks in with the mask and his next words are going to be, “We did everything we could,”’ Jennifer recalled to the host.

Brendan revealed the surgeon, who ‘looked like he was 12’, confirmed the father-of-four was just one month away from a potentially fatal heart attack.

However, he later discovered the surgeon realised there was a much larger underlying problem than the peripheral artery disease in Brendan’s legs because the star appeared on The Late, Late Show.

‘He said I was gasping for my breath [on The Late, Late Show] and then two weeks after the surgery I realised how tired I’d been,’ Brendan explained.

Thankfully, Brendan was back fighting fit and has done anything but slow down since. And following tradition, Mrs Brown’s Boys will be back with a Christmas Special tipped to become one of the most-watched programmes of December 25 – after Gavin and Stacey.

Though, the comic actually thinks both sitcoms will be pipped to the post by Her Majesty.

‘It’s a very good chance Gavin and Stacey will pull a really huge audience but this year, but I think [the highest-rated programme] will be the Queen’s Speech. It’s going to be the most important Queen’s Speech ever.’

Mrs Brown’s Boys returns to BBC One at 10.30pm on BBC One.
