Outlander season 5: Will Jamie Fraser be killed in battle amid trailer clue?

Season five of Outlander is going to be the most heart-wrenching instalment of the Starz time-travelling drama yet. The show will be hitting screens just after Valentine’s Day and promises to be the most emotional one yet. But could we see a major death with Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) biting the bullet?

Will Jamie Fraser be killed in Outlander season 5?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels

Season five is going to be fraught with danger for the Frasers as they have to face the American Revolutionary War.

Jamie is going to have his loyalties put to the test when he’s forced to don a dreaded redcoat and show his allegiance to the British crown.

A new trailer was recently released for the forthcoming series and hints at some dark times ahead for the family.

In fact, both Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) are urged to go back to the future in a bid to protect them.

Jamie, however, can’t travel through time and is going to be heading into battle, suggesting he’s in the firing line.

There are a number of lines from the trailer which allude to Jamie’s safety and possible demise.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) starts off by saying: “Do you ever feel everything’s pointing you towards something? Space? Time? History?”

Later on, she tells Jamie: “I am grateful every day we have.”

The Highlander also tells his wife: “Whatever tomorrow brings, it is a blessing you came to me.”

There’s a lot of ominous foreshadowing as it seems the two lovers could be ripped apart once again.

But given their 20-year separation, it’s unlikely Claire will be parted from her beloved husband ever again.

To add to the sense of impending death, Claire begs Jamie: “Promise, Jamie. Promise me you’re coming back.”

“I swear it,” Jamie tells her as he tries to allay her fears. However, it’s a tense moment for the couple with his life on the line.

Jamie and Claire have been thrown into the path of danger many times before but this time seems to be the most perilous for them.

In the Outlander novels, Jamie is seemingly killed off in An Echo in the Bone before making a return from the dead in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.

For her own protection, Claire marries Lord John Grey (David Berry) but things don’t go quite to plan when Jamie returns.

With the Starz show moving away from the source material, perhaps the TV show could also jump ahead.

Season five is going to be an amalgamation of material from The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

If Jamie was apparently killed off, it would certainly make things more dramatic for the show and bring another layer of danger.

So far on the show, the two major characters have survived all sorts of trauma and the stakes need to be raised.

By killing off a main character before resurrecting them would be a strong narrative boost to the show and could propel it forward into season six.

Outlander season 5 will air on Amazon Prime on February 16
