PIERS Morgan has revealed he flew to Antigua for Christmas – but explained he didn't break any rules to do it.
The 55-year-old Good Morning Britain star told followers that his sunshine break was above board under Tier 3 restictions.
Piers, a long-time critic of the government's coronavirus response, said he "went straight to the airport" before jetting to the Caribbean island in line with the government rules at the time.
The star came under fire from the politics site Guido Fawkes yesterday, who tweeted: "Piers was publicly calling for Christmas to be cancelled and tougher restrictions.
"He flew to Antigua first class on Virgin before Christmas Day."
However, Piers hit back, writing: "Hi Guido, Happy New Year. 1) The Govt said travel abroad from Tier 3 was allowed if people went straight to the airport.
"2) I didn't call for Christmas to be cancelled. 3) I haven't flown on Virgin for a year. 4) I last flew First Class in February. Otherwise, spot on!"
It was not until after Christmas that vast swathes of the UK were plunged into Tier 4 lockdown.
Piers announced on December 19 that he would be taking a break from Twitter, saying he was "done with 2020".
He returned to Good Morning Britain, where he had last appeared in a pre-recorded Christmas Day show, on Monday 4 January.
The star yesterday joked that his festive appearance on the show was a "Christmas miracle".
Piers was back on the news programme today waging war on coronavirus rule breaches, saying football fans were "crammed in like sardines" during yesterday's FA Cup clash between Tottenham and Marine FC.
The host hit out at scenes that saw hundreds gathered outside Rossett Park Stadium to welcome players from both teams ahead of the club’s historic meeting.
Piers revealed last month that seven members of his family had battled coronavirus – including his son.
