Rick and Morty came back last year for its fourth season after a two-year wait between series. The Adult Swim cartoon aired its finale last month and creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon are now working on season five. A release date for the next series, however, has yet be confirmed.

Rick and Morty has got to be one of the most mind-boggling series on television with its bizarre plots grounded in scientific explanations.

Through Rick’s time-travelling antics and hopping from one universe to the next, he has brought trouble to the Smiths’ family home numerous occasions.

Season two’s Total Rickall was no different as the house became inundated with alien parasites implanting false memories of fake characters.

This led to the introduction of Uncle Steve, Mr Beauregard, Cousin Nicky, and Reverse Giraffe as well as the one and only Mr Poopybutthole.

While the other fake characters were easily killed off and revealed to be parasites, it was a different story for Mr Poopybutthole.

When Beth shot him, instead of taking the shape of a parasite, the unusual character started bleeding, suggesting he was actually real all along.

But if he isn’t a parasite, then what is Mr Poopybutthole and where did he come from?

Co-creator Dan Harmon has since opened up the little yellow creature’s origins.

What is Mr Poopybutthole in Rick and Morty?

Creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have been known for not giving straight answers to Rick and Morty questions.

They believe there are no right or wrong answers and often like fans to come up with their own theories.

But in 2017, Harmon talked through a theory which could explain the existence of Mr Poopybutthole.
Harmon told Cinema Blend: “I’ll give you another theory.

“How about Mr Poopybutthole – just as where there’s flies, there’s spiders – wherever these parasites start blooming, Mr Poopybutthole is a different species who is more benign, or more advanced.

“He subsists on lives like the way that hermit crabs steal other shells.”

Harmon continued: “Maybe Mr Poopybutthole takes advantage of the holes put in your memory and kind of burrows into those pre-existing holes.

“So he shows up where those parasites are, and he’s more of a fourth-dimensional phantom species that isn’t bound by space, and only appears in concentrations of temporal malfunction or misperception and breakdown.

“Mr Poopybutthole is insinuating himself into the universe regardless of timeline. And the same powers that allow him to do that allow him to directly talk with the audience.”

But The Film Theorists have another theory about where Mr Poopybutholle came from.

Talking in a video posted on their YouTube channel last year, The Film Theorists suggested that Mr Poopybutthole could actually be another Morty from a different universe.

They explained how in web special The Poop in my Pants, Mr Poopybutthole went to the same school as Morty but in a different universe, as his bears the flag of the Galactic Federation.

Other hints include the little yellow character having a signed note from Summer and a picture of the Cronenbergs, the creatures accidentally created by Rick’s potion.

Throughout Rick and Morty, there have been Mortys from alternative universes of various shapes and sizes who have looked almost nothing like the one on Earth C-137.

So could Mr Poopybutthole be a “fourth-dimensional phantom species” or just another Morty?

Rick and Morty is available to watch on Adult Swim.
