‘On the Record’, which was heavily criticized prior to its debut, focuses on Drew Dixon, one of the women who has accused the Def Jam Recordings co-founder of sexual misconduct.
AceShowbiz -The controversial documentary movie about the sexual-misconduct allegations against music mogul Russell Simmons was met with standing ovations when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend (January 25-26).
The Apple TV+ programme, “On the Record“, centres on Drew Dixon – one of the women who has accused the Def Jam Recordings co-founder of sexual misconduct.
But while the project was heavily criticised prior to its debut, the film received two standing ovations when it played at Sundance, proving itself to be a hit with audiences, reported the New York Post’s gossip column Page Six.
Ahead of its release, Simmons pleaded with media mogul Oprah Winfrey to step away from the project, insisting, “I have never been violent or forced myself on anyone.”
The star latter announced she was departing the film in early January (2020), revealing the record executive had tried to contact her “multiple times” about her involvement, and had “attempted to pressure” her into distancing herself from the forthcoming release.
However, she is adamant Simmons’ efforts – including a public plea on Instagram – did not influence her decision to withdraw as a producer.
Simmons was first the subject of rape allegations from Dixon in 2017, when she accused the hip-hop pioneer of forcing himself on her in his apartment back in 1995. Simmons has denied all claims of non-consensual sex.
