The studio makes the announcement during the ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ panel at the CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, confirming that Zachary Levi is returning as the titular superhero.
AceShowbiz -“Shazam! 2” is officially in the works, months after the first movie debuted to critical acclaim and commercial success. Warner Bros. confirmed the news at the “Wonder Woman 1984” panel at the Comic Con Expo in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Sunday, December 8.
During the announcement, the studio confirmed that Zachary Levi will reprise his role as the titular superhero. No production date nor release date is revealed as of press time, but Levi previously suggested that the “Shazam!” sequel could go into production as early as summer 2020.
The “Chuck” alum previously said on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” that he intended to maintain his buff physique in hopes of returning for the sequel. “I think I gained, like, 24 pounds (10 kilograms) in the first couple of months and I’ve stayed in the gym six days a week through all of it still, till this day. And I’m healthier and stronger than I’ve ever been and I’m so grateful for that,” the 38-year-old actor said. “I worked out today. I’m hoping for a sequel.”
Back in April, just days after “Shazam!” opened in U.S. theaters, it was reported that its sequel was in early stage of development with original screenplay writer Henry Gayden being tapped to work on the second film. David F. Sandberg is also expected to return as director, with Peter Safran serving as producer.
Based on DC Comics, the movie follows Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as a teenage boy who can transform into an adult superhero, as played by Levi. Jack Dylan Grazer stars as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, Billy’s foster brother and friend. While other cast members are not announced yet, it’s pretty obvious that Angel and Grazer will return for the sequel as well.
“Shazam!” received a largely positive response from critics, with 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie grossed a total of $365 million worldwide on a reported budget of $80-100 million.
