Netflix has revealed a trailer for the streaming giant's new reality competition series based on the hit dystopian Korean drama Squid Game.
In the teaser for Squid Game: The Challenge, which is set to be released in November, a warehouse is used to construct an elaborate set where contestants battle through a series of games, inspired by the original show.
The 10-part competition will see entrants try to win a prize of 4.56 million dollars (£3,736,054) as they are seen being watched by a similar doll to the Korean series while wearing comparable green tracksuits.
There will be 456 real players entering the game – and each round contestants are eliminated when their strategies, alliances and character are put to the test.
However, the streamer confirmed when it announced the show in 2022 that the players will not face the deadly consequences of the drama series, and their worst fate will be going home empty-handed.
After seeing the trailer on YouTube, fans were left divided, with some positive and negative reactions. One viewer commented: "This is super crazy show lol Can't wait!," while another wrote: "Ok now we can't wait!"
But others weren't as convinced, as one person said: "Not Netflix missing the point of their own show ! Lol," as someone else wrote: "So they just released the teaser for season 2… I'll just wait for that."
Netflix also announced at Tudum 2023: A Netflix Global Fan Event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that The Acolyte star Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo would be returning for season two of the show Squid Game.
The dystopian Korean drama series was described as the streaming giant’s “biggest TV show ever” when it was released in 2021. It also teased that new cast members – South Korean boy band ZE:A singer Yim Si-Wan; Misaeng: Incomplete Life star Kang Ha-Neul; The Day Of The Kidnapping star Park Sung-Hoon; and rapper, record producer and actor Yang Dong-Geun – will also be starring as new players.
Hwang Dong-hyuk was previously announced as returning to directing duties.
Producers started recruiting for the challenge, which has been billed "the biggest reality competition ever," last summer, as they called for fans to apply, for a chance to be one of the 456 people taking part.
Netflix also claimed that as well as giving out the largest winnings ever, the show will also feature the biggest cast ever assembled. “Squid Game took the world by storm with [director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic imagery,” vice president Brandon Riegg said.
“We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever.
"[It will be] full of tension and twists, with the biggest-ever cash prize at the end," the Netflix boss added. There will be ten episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge, which is being produced by ITV and will be filmed in the UK.
Casting for Squid Game: The Challenge is now open for applications at SquidGameCasting.com, and Netflix is seeking contestants from all around the world.
