DB Woodside is known for appearing in a number of well-loved shows, including Lucifer and 24. However, one of his best remembered turns was as lawyer Jeff Malone in Suits where he played Jessica Pearson’s (played by Gina Torres) boyfriend. Going on to star in the spin-off show Pearson, fans have been able to see him in action again – but why did he leave in the first place?
Why did DB Woodside leave Suits?
Jeff Malone was first introduced at the beginning of season four of the legal series.
While he was formerly from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the character went on to become a senior partner at Pearson Specter.
Fans followed his storyline and blossoming romance with Jessica throughout the seasons of the show.
This involved his resignation after she lied to him about Louis Litt’s (Rick Hoffman) promotion as well as their eventual reconciliation.
He departed the show when he decided to move to Chicago in season six, before Jessica told him she would love to join him.
While the actor never revealed why he decided to leave the show, he did go on to become very busy with a starring role in hugely popular series Lucifer.
In that show he plays an angel named Amenadiel who is the older brother of Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis).
His role on Suits was also tied in with the character of Jessica, who also made a decision to leave the show in season six.
At the time, actor Gina Torres told The New York Times that she wanted to focus on her personal life.
She said: “I think the public doesn’t understand the rigours of shooting a show for an actor, much less when you’re on location and away from home.
“At one point I approached Aaron [Korsh, the showrunner,] and said, ‘It’s not that I don’t love the show and love Jessica, who is my alter ego. But my life is my life, and I need to take care of it.’”
However, the pair’s story did pick up once again in the Suits spin-off show Pearson, which aired on the USA Network earlier this year.
Speaking about the return, Woodside told Showbiz Junkies: “When we last saw Jessica and Jeff, Jessica was moving to Chicago to be with him and they were gonna start a life there.
“We find them now in Chicago and Jessica has now taken a job with the mayor’s office.
“Unfortunately, some bad things happen, which is gonna put Jessica and Jeff at odds once again. They can’t catch a break. They really can’t.”
He also revealed that part of the draw for his return was to work with Gina Torres once again, who is one of his oldest friends.
He added: “It’s a phenomenal show and it’s being driven by her. She is remarkable. She really is remarkable.”
The actor also posted about his excitement to be returning with a picture memory of his first appearance on Suits.
He wrote: “It’s been a real joy working on Suits and now Pearson. Can’t wait to see what happens next.”
Pearson is currently awaiting a second season renewal with no news announced yet.
But if the show does return, it seems likely that Woodside would be back with it.
The last fans saw of his character, he confronted Jessica about the FBI investigating her and he urges her to cooperate with them.
Suits seasons 1-9 are now available to stream on Netflix.
