Kim Kardashian West may be the queen of her four sisters, but it’s clear who the real mastermind behind the brand is. Kris Jenner, momager extraordinaire, has not only successfully managed a career for herself, but also for her former spouse, Caitlyn Jenner, and all six of her children. In fact, Jenner’s youngest daughter credits her mother for the success of her company, Kylie Cosmetics.
Love them or hate them, the KarJenners wield an enormous amount of influence around the globe. At the forefront of their brand is Kris Jenner. With her larger than life personality, Jenner is often the center of attention, occasionally even taking the attention away from her own children without even trying. In a recent interview with The Cut, Kardashian West shared a story about how her mother managed to take all the attention and also a Chanel bag right from under her nose.
Kim Kardashian West gets approached at the 2013 Met Gala
Back in 2013, Kardashian West attended her first Met Ball Gala. While she was there, she was approached by French fashion editor, Carine Roitfeld about doing a photoshoot. The shoot was for CR Magazine and was to be shot by the well-respected photographer, Karl Lagerfeld.
The 39-year-old reality star was over the moon by the offer and flew to Paris shortly after with Jenner in tow. The KKW Beauty owner was already thrilled by the opportunity to be shot by Lagerfeld, but when a friend informed her that the photographer gave all of his models Chanel bags as a thank you gift, she got even more excited. Though she was unsure if the rumors were true, she and her friend held out hope that she’d be receiving a rare, luxury handbag.
Kris Jenner is the belle of the ball
The photoshoot was actually going pretty well for Kardashian West until her mother showed up and immediately hit it off with Lagerfeld. “Halfway through the shoot, my mom walks in and she’s wearing Chanel leggings, Chanel thigh-high boots, blazer, turtleneck, dangling earrings, Chanel cuffs, gloves, sunglasses, beret: She was decked in Chanel from the ’80s. Karl stops the shoot and walks over to her and is like, ‘Oh my God, are you her mother? I remember this jacket! I remember these gloves! I did those earrings!’ The two of them have this love affair like I’ve never seen before,” Kardashian West confessed about Jenner’s instant connection with the photographer.
The pair hit it off so well that Kardashian West actually got uncomfortable and contacted her sisters for moral support. “And I’m like, Hello? I’m sitting here posing. I’m so uncomfortable. I’m like, This is so embarrassing, and this is so annoying. I remember texting my sisters and being like, ‘Guys, mom is stealing my shiiiine.’ This is my first fashion shoot!” Kardashian West recalled.
How Jenner stole the Chanel bag from Kardashian West
Despite the discomfort that Kardashian West felt, the shoot went well. When the shoot was finally over, Lagerfeld approached the KKW Fragrance owner and Jenner with one hand behind his back. Kardashian West recalls being overjoyed that the rumors were proving to be true and she started fantasizing about what she’d do with the Chanel bag. “I’m thinking: I will cherish this forever, and I’m pregnant, so one day I’ll give this bag to my daughter,” the 39-year-old recalled.
But, Kardashian West’s expectations were never to become a reality “[Lagerfeld] comes up and he’s like, ‘Kim, this was the best shoot. Thank you so much. But Kris, here is a bag for you,‘ and he gives the fu*king bag to my mom. And it was a LEGO clutch. They were like ten grand, and you could never get one. And this was all Swarovski crystal with hand stones that was just a sample that never made it to production,” the mom of four recalled about Jenner being gifted the infamous bag over her.
Will Jenner gift the bag to one of her grandkids
While the story is certainly hilarious to us, Kardashian West doesn’t quite see it that way. She admitted that she ended up crying in the bathroom thinking her mother stole her shine. As for the Chanel bag, Jenner still has it in her closet. But, Kardashian West has made it clear who the real owner of the bag is. “I’ve said to her: ‘Just so we’re clear, in your will, this goes to North.’ I don’t need it. That bag was for my daughter.”
