Australian comedian Adam Hills has spoken about his time at the King's Coronation, revealing it felt "a like a celebrity catch up" after sharing a moment with Ant and Dec. The Last Leg host was invited as part of the Australian delegation.
Adam, who is entering his 28th series of the Channel 4 chat show, spoke to OK! in an exclusive chat about attending the Coronation back in May, describing it as "unbelievable". "I'm walking into the Westminster Abbey with Nick Cave, who then gets distracted because he spots a friend three queues away, goes over to chat to him and it's the former Archbishop of Canterbury," he says.
"Then Katy Perrys wandering around behind me because she can't find a seat because it wasn't allocated seating. It was sit wherever you can find a spot."
"There's Lionel Richie. There's Jennifer Saunders, Dame Judi Dench, it was amazing. And yet, part of it was like a celebrity catch up."
He added that he bumped into Britain's Got Talent hosts Ant and Dec while they were on their way to the toilet. "Ant and Dec walk pass to go to the loo at one point they both stopped and saw me and went, 'Oh my God, this is nuts. How surreal is this?'
"But then, that moment when they lowered the crown onto the king's head was the most silent I've ever heard a crowd in my entire life. It was just, you literally could have heard a pin drop. And I think the enormity of the situation hit everyone as they all went, oh my goodness, we're watching someone being crowned right now."
The 52-year-old began his comedy career in Australia and hosted a number of shows Down Under before moving to the UK to present The Last Leg. While it started off as a chat show based around the Paralympics back in 2012, it has since become a series in which Adam and his co-hosts Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker dissect the current affairs of the week.
On being invited to the coronation, Adam said it "completely came out of the blue". He added, "I got a call asking if I'd like to go and my first thought was, well it's my daughter's birthday on the Monday, can I get back in time? Is it okay if I don't go to the concert?"
The comedian began the day with afternoon tea at the High Commissioners house and met the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, who came with a gift. "It was a cap from my favourite rugby league team that he also supports with his name embroidered on the back."
Ant and Dec announced that same month that they would be "taking a break" from Saturday Night Takeaway after its 20th series in order to "catch [their] breath".
The Last Leg airs on Friday 30th June at 10pm on Channel 4.
