The first season of the show chronicled Payton Hobart (Platt) as he runs for student body president at the Saint Sebastian High School in Santa Barbara, California. The season finale of the first season jumps three years into the future, where all of the characters have moved on and many are in college. It introduces a New York State Senator, played by Judith Light, who has ambitions of being the Vice President of the United States. Hobart plans to thwart these efforts by challenging her for her senate seat.
Here’s what we know about the second season
According to Netflix, the official description for Season 2 is as follows:
Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) fights to unseat Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race. As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy, but Payton – who sees this as the next step on his path to the Presidency – must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple. Meanwhile, his mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage him and everything he’s hoping to accomplish. But if Payton wants to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character, he must find his voice and strengthen his political message to inspire and excite the voters.
Netflix released several first-look images for the season on Monday, which reveal more about what to expect.
The images depict the main characters from Saint Sebastian helping Payton with his campaign for New York State Senate. We also see the new principal characters, Standish and Gold, as they plan to thwart Payton’s attempts.
What have cast members said previously about this upcoming season?
In an interview in October 2019, Platt spoke about his hopes for what would happen in the show’s second season.
“Obviously Season 2 will follow that election and I’m really excited to go toe to toe with Judith [Light],” he told IndieWire. “I would hope that it would continue to explore this larger question of authenticity and feigned authenticity. When [Payton] is getting involved now in the real world of politics and we don’t have sort of the cover of, like, a high school sheen, how does that battle then manifest as far as how much can you get away with curating your image? I’m sure there’ll also be lots of hot article [inspiration] – the way there has been in the first season with gun control and voter fraud and all of that.”
He continued, “I would love to see what a ‘healthy’ actual human relationship might do for Payton, like a romantic one. Both of his romantic relationships in Season 1 are obviously very fraught for different reasons. One is very wrapped up in the tactic and one is no longer alive, so to see how an actual steady romantic relationship might pull him in either direction — of like blind ambition, sacrificing that, or leaning into the empathy and authenticity — would be interesting.”
The second season debuts June 12 on Netflix.
