The eccentric Joe Exotic was sentenced to 22 years in prison at the start of 2020 for his murder-for-hire plot against his chief rival, Carole Baskin.

The seven-part docuseries follows the two colourful personalities and it is hoped the episodes will send a stark message to those who are considering keeping wild animals.

Creator of the series, Rebecca Chaiklin, told Vanity Fair: “There will be some people who are really happy with the series. There will be others who are not so happy.

“I think it will be a moment of reckoning for who they are and what their behaviour actually is.”

She refers to some of those who star in the series, who had not seen any of the footage before it premiered on Friday.

The first episode introduces Joe, who Netflix describes as the “gun-toting operator of an Oklahoma big cat park”.

He was accused of hiring someone to murder his business rival, Carole Baskin, who has been described as “the Mother Teresa of Big Cats”.

She is still continuing her mission to end the abuse of large cats through her Big Cat Rescue Sanctuary, and in the show it appears Joe had somewhat of a rivalry with her.

Other episodes in the series focus on the employees at big cat parks and asks the question, are treated just as badly as the animals.

They are subject to long hours entertaining visitors and work hard at their jobs.

The episodes also focus on the relationship between Carole and Joe after an event in her past puts her in the limelight.

She is keen to prove her innocence but Joe, who wants to put an end to her work, is quick to point the finger at her.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Carole said: “I think for Joe, [the feud] was probably very personal, because people said there wasn’t a day in his life that he wasn’t ranting and raving, and carrying on and calling out my name.

“But for me, he was just one of about a dozen of these bad guys that I was exposing online, talking to reporters about, and saying, ‘No, conservation [does not mean] breeding tigers for use as pay-to-play props’.”

Carole has also been criticised for the legitimacy of her cat rescue centre but she claims it is more ethical than some other parks.

Viewers learn more about Joe’s character and personality as he tries to become an internet and TV star, but his venture is interrupted when he is faced with a mysterious law suit.

He continues to face personal turmoil and tragedy, and when the FBI catches wind of Joe’s work, desperation sets in and he feels victimised.

A trailer is available to watch on Netflix now, which says there are more captive tigers in the US than there are in the wild across the world.

Joe is described as a “mythical character” who keeps lions, tigers and bears at his park.

In the trailer Joe is heard saying: “This is my way of living and nobody is going to tell me otherwise. You are going to have to kill me to shut me up.”
