WONKA: Official trailer
Timothée Chalamet has received a mixed response for the first look at his next starring role, Wonka.
The Little Women star will portray Roald Dahl’s quirky chocolate maker in the musical-prequel film directed by Paddington’s Paul King.
Warner Bros’ first trailer for the film was released on Tuesday ahead of its Christmas 2023 release and promises plenty of fantasy and charm.
Hugh Grant also pops up as a dance-obsessed Oompa-Loompa, while British icons like Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins and Olivia Colman round out the supporting cast.
Unfortunately, some viewers aren’t convinced Chalamet was the right choice to take over from Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

@_PigginTeaBreak wrote: “This could actually go down as a classic, but sadly Chalamet is woefully miscast.
“Completely unbelievable as a young Willy Wonka.”
@CosmonautMarcus joked: “Hate to say it but Timmy lacks the Whimsy. He is just not a silly little guy. He doesn’t have silly guy energy.”

“Not sure there was ever a possibility that the Willy Wonka origin story would be good but Jesus Christ,” @nikc_is_sad fumed.
“Timothée Chalamet giving less than nothing. Such a horrendous miscast, he has negative silliness.”
“Timmy Chalamet looks hilariously miscast in that Willy Wonka movie,” @ujjwalmohindra added.
@ForreHorsemen tweeted: “Looks terrible, unfortunately.
“They’ve been trying to make Chalamet a star for years now, but he’s overexposed and has been in too many flops already.
“He’s also miscast badly in this. RIP Gene Wilder.”
Although @akingofburbank argued: “I get why people think Wonka looks like a miss, but Timothée Chalamet is not miscast. He looks like he is having the time of his life.”
Thankfully, Chalamet still has the release of Dune: Part Two arriving a month before for those who don’t think Wonka is their cup of hot chocolate.
Wonka releases in cinemas on Friday, December 15.
