From Starsky and Hutch to The Sweeney and Magnum P.I, TV shows have brought us some of the most famous cop cars in history – but do you know which is the nation's favourite?
As the stars of BBC programme Top Gear prepare to take viewers on a trip down memory lane this Sunday (June 12, 2022), the series has finally revealed the answer.
Following a survey of over 1000 British adults, commissioned by the long running car programme, the burgundy Jaguar Mark 2 driven by Inspector Morse was declared as the nation's favourite.
The classic British-made model was voted as the top cop car by over 53% of participants, with presenter Chris Harris sharing his love for the vehicle.
He said: "The Mark 2 originally had a reputation for grace and sophistication but by the 1980’s when Morse was on the TV, it had a different image, it was a bit more bank robber than stately home.
"But it all fitted with Morse’s character, the curmudgeon and intellect who loved real ale and crosswords and disliked pleasantries."
However, Inspector Morses' famous motorcar was closely followed by another classic that just missed out on the top spot.
Gene Hunt's iconic Audi Quattro from BBC time travelling crime drama Ashes to Ashes was a close second, while the detective's Ford Cortina from Life On Mars was listed at number nine in the top ten.
Making up the top three was the Ferrari 308 GTS driven by Thomas Magnum in American crime series Magnum PI, with the list completed by vehicles driven by some of TV's most iconic crime fighting teams.
Taking fourth position was the Ford Capri driven by William Bodie and Ray Doyle in The Professionals, while Starsky and Hutch's famous Ford Gran Torino came in at number five.
That's not all, as the top ten nation's favourite cop cars continued with Sonny Crockett's Ferrari Testarossa from Miami Vice taking sixth position, Vera Stanhope's Land Rover Defender in seventh and Inspector Jack Regan's Ford Consul GT from The Sweeney reaching number eight in the poll.
Completing the top ten was the Mercedes SL and Ford Escort XR3i cabriolet driven by crime duo Harriet and Jim in Dempsey and Makepeace.
Top Gear viewers will be able to relive their memories of the classic cop cars in this week's episode – with Freddie Flintoff on a mission to give the Sinclair C5 one more eccentric adventure, alongside Chris Harris and Paddy McGuiness.
Top Gear airs this Sunday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
