The timeline of the MCU may have been thrown into chaos by the departure of director Scott Derrickson from Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
This May, the MCU will kick back into gear via the release of Black Widow. Later this year, the next chapter will be released in the form of The Eternals. We don’t know about the rest of you, but we are hankering for some more from the MCU. We needed a break following the epic that was Avengers: Endgame but we are ready and raring to go for Phase 4.
Although 2020 will signal the beginning of the phase, 2021 will be when it kicks into full gear. Marvel currently has an awful lot planned for that twelve-month period. Four movies and three TV shows to be exact. Plus, earlier this week, the future of one of those four movies was thrown into disarray by the departure of its director.
Scott Derrickson revealed to the world that he was stepping down as director of Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Production hasn’t begun on the movie, but it is currently slated for a May 2021 release. Now Marvel is on the hunt for a new director, the release of the movie might have to be pushed back a little. Considering the MCU’s jam-packed 2021, that might not necessarily be a bad thing.
Plus, looking forward to 2022, Marvel has already revealed that it will be releasing three movies. The thing is, only one of those slots has been officially filled. There’s a chance that if the release of Dr. Strange 2 does need to be pushed, it can jump into one of those 2022 slots, thus giving more time to find a new director and start production while also making 2021 look a lot less overwhelming.
The trouble is, that is easier said than done. The MCU’s movies are intricately linked. The overarching storyline going forward will have been meticulously planned out and it probably won’t be as simple as pushing the release date of Dr. Strange 2. Things that take place in other movies released in 2021 may no longer make sense. Stay tuned for what’s next as, despite Marvel’s calm demeanor about all of this, we imagine it’s panic stations behind the scenes.
