Martin Fowler (James Bye)’s set for a not-so-happy Christmas in EastEnders after he knocked someone down in a hit-and-run following his latest criminal caper.
After his alliance with Ben (Max Bowden) resulted him losing Stacey (Lacey Turner) and the kids, Martin has returned to a life of crime with Tubbs, with the pair elated in Monday night’s show as they completed another job.
However that was short-lived after his car collided with someone – yet to be identified – leaving Martin with a dilemma of whether to help the person or flee the scene.
It’s not the first time he’s been involved in a hit-and-run over Christmas – with the latest incident having echoes of what happened with Jamie Mitchell (Jack Ryder).
Just who was Jamie – and what happened to him?
Who was Jamie Mitchell?
Jamie Mitchell, the godson of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) was a resident heartthrob on Albert Square in the 90s, leaving the soap at Christmas 2002.
He was taken in by Phil when he arrived in the Square, after it came to light that his uncle Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) was beating him.
After having a one-night stand with Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks), Jamie and Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) began a relationship, getting engaged twice over the course of their romance.
At one point Jamie was even thought to have fathered a child – baby Chloe, aka Sonia’s daughter Rebecca (Jasmine Armfield) with her – but she turned out to be the daughter of Martin Fowler (whom Sonia had been sleeping with before Jamie).
The relationship came under strain because of this as well as Jamie having a fling with Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan).
How did Martin Fowler kill Jamie?
Despite their troubles Jamie and Sonia were reconciled – but before the pair of them could get married Jamie was knocked down by Martin (played by James Alexandrou at the time), who accidentally ran him over outside Walford East tube station.
A devastated Sonia was by his bedside in hospital before he passed away.
Jamie’s death has been referenced by Martin in recent years, calling it ‘the biggest mistake of his life’.
The character was killed off after Jack Ryder decided to leave the soap, saying at the time: ‘I have decided to leave EastEnders after four fantastic years to pursue other projects. It has not been an easy decision but I felt it was time for me to build on the experience the show has given me and play other parts.
EastEnders gave me the best opportunity a young actor could have dreamed of and I will always be grateful to them.’
After leaving EastEnders Jack has worked as an actor and director both on TV and on stage, directing the stage production of The Full Monty and working as assistant director on Gary Barlow musical The Girls.
More recently he was seen in Holby City as evil Evan Crowhurst.
EastEnders continues on BBC One on Tuesday night at 7.30pm.
