During Sunday night’s 64th Grammy awards, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky made a passionate speech from his bunker. Zelensky has become a figure of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia as the war continues to tear apart the country. At the beginning of the war, Zelensky made the decision to remain in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, pleading with the West for military help. However, his speech on Sunday night has formed some opposing opinions, with TV and Radio presenter Beverly Turner revealing she wasn’t “sure if necessary”.
Beverly and former journalist and politician Gyles Brandreth joined This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary to discuss the day’s biggest headlines.
Speaking on Zelensky’s speech, Turner said: “I find these sort of collisions of politics and entertainment a little troubling, I can’t lie.
“It is not to take away from the horrendous situation in Ukraine, the horrific images we have seen in the press today and over the weekend and the damage caused by the Russian troops to the Ukrainian people.
“But I suspect this is a moment in history that we will look back on, and this is the time that Hollywood celebrities and showbiz absolutely collided with geopolitics, and I imagine we will never go back to a time when entertainment could be entertainment.
“And politics could be politics, and they were very separate! Of course, Zelensky was an actor, he played the Ukrainian president in the most extraordinary facts of live imitating are.
“This is very easy for him, there are lots of leaders who couldn’t put on a heartfelt speech like that, but I’m just not sure that it is necessary.”
Viewers who were watching the conversation slammed Beverly’s comments and took to Twitter to give their opinions.
@Christinaaaaa87 commented: “@thismorning have I just heard right? Beverley Turner against President Zelensky making the world aware of GENOCIDE but absolutely appalled by Downing Street parties and calling for justice?”
@Gm4nHere added: “Why do they have Bev on. Always disagrees with everything #ThisMorning #Zelensky.”
@PaulaTeeBee fumed: “What stupid comment! He’s reaching out to everyone on a massive platform. You’re doing a great job, Zelensky #thismorning.”
@Mabel_Mouse_ wrote: “President Zelensky is amazing. There’s no way Boris Johnson would be behaving like him if we were in the same situation #ThisMorning.”
Not all viewers were furious over Beverly’s comments about Volodymyr Zelensky, with Elizabeth Scott agreeing: “#ThisMorning I agree with Beverly. Keep politics out of out these things. Think Zelensky would have more important things to do than go to award ceremonies when his people are being bombed.”
Annie Chartus said: “I kind of agree with her tbh… it’s a rare comment from me, but Bev has a point with this!” (sic)
The speech which Zelensky gave touched everyone who heard it, as he said: “The war. What is more opposite of music?
“The silence of ruined cities and killed people. Our children draw swooping rockets, not shooting stars.
“Over 400 children have been injured, and 153 children died, and we will never see them drawing.
“Our parents are happy to wake up in the morning in bomb shelters but alive. Our loved ones don’t know if we will be together again.
“The war doesn’t let us choose who survives and who stays in eternal silence. Our musicians wear body armour instead of tuxedos.
“They sing to the wounded in hospitals, even to those who can’t hear them. But the music will break through anyway.
“We defend our freedom. To live. To love. To sound. On our land, we are fighting Russia, which brings horrible silence with its bombs. The dead silence.
“Fill the silence with your music! Fill it today to tell our story. Tell the truth about his war on your social networks, on TV. Support us in any way you can.
“Any — but not silence. And then peace will come. To all our cities, the war is destroying. Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Volnovakha, Mariupol and others.
“They are legends already. But I have a dream of living. And free. Free like you on the Grammy stage.”
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
