Adam Duritz Shaved Off His Dreadlocks and Honestly It’s About Time

Adam Duritz, frontman of the band Counting Crows, has sported his signature dreadlocks for pretty much the duration of his musical career; that’s around 30 years. But the 55-year-old singer recently decided he’s finally ready for a change: after taking the dreads for one last victory lap during the Crows’ performance at Outside Lands last week, Duritz shaved his head while on a visit to the U.K.

“Oh yeah, I flew to London and shaved my head!” Duritz wrote on an Instagram post. “Anarchy In The UK indeed motherfuckers!!!” The comments from fans have been largely positive, with a number of them complimenting Duritz on how much younger he looks now.

What a great week to present the 3rd podcast in our Woodstock series, Ep 73 An Aquarian Exposition, Pt. 3 countingcrows.com/Podcast (link also in bio). We visited our winery @elysewinery and tasted barrel samples of next year’s vintages w/my pops & @mariataylor1111 , I cooked onstage AND played at @outsidelands, we checked out some of the vineyards we harvested (including @morisolivineyard w/ @cmorisoli himself), we drank every bottle of wine we could get our hands on, our winemaker @russell_bevan talked some science, and…oh yeah, I flew to London and shaved my head! Anarchy In The UK indeed motherfuckers!!!

Duritz has taken incredibly well to the dread-free life, and immediately developed a penchant for the underrated art of hat making.

“Went for a walk in London this morning and nearly froze my brain right out of my head,” he wrote on Instagram on Thursday. “Apparently it’s a whole new world out there. Immediately set out for Piccadilly with Z in search of a hatter and bought hats. Jaunty little fucker now, ain’t I? Hatters…right? Who knew? We clearly need more Hatters in New York. Not to mention Cobblers. Don’t even get me started on Milliners and Haberdashers.”

After three decades with the same hairstyle, this is a pretty drastic change, but Duritz is adapting well. What prompted the haircut? We may never know. Duritz has previously admitted that his locks were partially made up of hair extensions, so perhaps it was getting too high maintenance. Or maybe he simply decided that the world needed one less white guy with dreads.
