Camila Cabello Calls the Early Stages of Her and Shawn Mendes' Relationship "Awkward"

Guess who’s back, back again? Camilla Cabello is back, and she’s telling everyone and their mother—for the five-millionth time, might I add—about her relationship with her singer-songwriter boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. I mean, one would think that Camila would get tired of talking about her boyfriend in interviews so much, but nopeeee. As long as her aptly titled Romance album promo cycle keeps on chuggin’, she’ll keep on gushing about her bae!

This time, Camila did an interview with Rolling Stone and spilled some major tea about the early stages of her and Shawn’s relationship. According to Camila, she and Shawn began hitting off when they collaborated on their song, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Their friendship started treading into romantic territory, but because they were both young, they kind didn’t know what to do about it. (Raise you hand if you’ve been there! 🙋)

“During “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” I really bonded with him as more than a friend,” she said. “I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings.”

And as a result, things became hella awkward, hella fast. Mind you, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” came out almost five years ago when Shawn and Camila were 16 and 17! “It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird,” Camila explained. “An energy was there from the beginning, but after that song, we didn’t spend as much time together.”
