Denise Welch emotionally hits out at Matt Hancock

Denise Welch, 64, could not contain her frustration as she broke down in tears, while discussing her father’s last days during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Loose Women star passionately hit out at former health secretary Matt Hancock for having an affair with an aide, while the rest of the nation was abiding by the lockdown rules.

The former Hollyoaks star blasted the MP for “gloating” at the rules set out by the government to contain the spread of the virus, while he had an affair back in 2021.

Unable to contain her emotions, Denise said: “The fact is, it wasn’t about Matt Hancock having an affair.

“I didn’t care who he had an affair with, it was of so little interest to me.

“It was the fact that he, and now you can all see it, gloated at the fact that you weren’t allowed to be with your lover, and you weren’t allowed to be with your mother, and you weren’t allowed to be with your dad, who was gonna die very soon.

“And you weren’t allowed to go in an ambulance with your dad.

“But he was with his lover and during the time that they allowed football matches to start, could no no one see that this made no sense, that you were allowed to go to the football but I couldn’t go in an ambulance with my 84-year-old terrified, vulnerable father?”

The TV star went on: “I wasn’t allowed to see him in Durham hospital for three weeks, when he was so desperately on FaceTime not understanding what was going on, because they were all so busy with different things in the hospital.

“Even though they told me there was no COVID in Durham hospital that time, they couldn’t let me see my dad.”

Matt resigned from his position as health secretary at the end of the pandemic, after being caught having an affair with an aide.

He previously defended himself from the backlash claiming he had a “bucket of s**t poured over his head” in the wake of his relationship with aide Gina Coladangelo.

Saying he is “only human”, he said he wants “forgiveness for the human error I made”. He admitted a “failure of leadership” over the affair.

He told the Mail: “I want forgiveness for the mistake I made, the failure of leadership at the end of the pandemic when I fell in love with Gina and I broke the guidance that I’d signed off.

“I want forgiveness for the human error I made… but I’m not asking for forgiveness for how I handled the pandemic.

“I woke up every single morning determined to do the very best I could in the most impossible circumstances until I needed to go to bed at night. I did that for 18 months.

“There is a good, honest explanation for every single decision I made, whether it turned out to be right or not.”

Last year, Denise issued a scathing rant after it was announced that the MP would be entering the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! jungle.

Taking to her Twitter account, the TV star exclaimed: “I bet all those people living with the pain of not being ‘allowed’ to be with their loved ones in the last years of their lives will be so excited to see Matt f****g Hancock in the jungle!! How dare he!!!”

Denise also previously expressed her anger at former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to forgive Hancock, after he broke coronavirus restriction measures.

She said: “For Boris Johnson to say Matt Hancock has apologised for breaking social distancing rules and this matter is closed, how f*****g dare you say this matter is closed.

“This man who has enforced the rules of social distance like no other, who had got it to the point where I, two weeks ago, was not allowed to travel in an ambulance with my terrified father who was being moved between hospitals at 84-years-old.”
