How Kate is paying tribute to Princess Diana through her Coronation jewellery

Although Princess Diana’s untimely death was long before Kate Middleton ever met Prince William, Kate has frequently paid tribute to her late mother-in-law in various touching ways.

For the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Kate chose to give a subtle nod to Diana’s memory by wearing a pair of her earrings for the occasion.

The Princess of Wales wore a set of Diana’s pearl and diamond earrings throughout the procession and ceremony and has been spotted in them on several occasions before, with them being one of Diana’s favourite pairs.

The earrings were a gift to Princess Diana from Collingwood before she became Princess of Wales, with the jewellery firm being a favourite of the Spencer family, and were given to her ahead of her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981. They feature a round diamond stud, with a second round diamond danging from it and bell cap set containing a pearl drop and three additional rows of smaller diamonds.

The touching tribute marks a handover from one Princess of Wales to another, and the earrings have become one of the most recognised pieces of jewellery that Kate wears thanks to their sentimental message.

In addition to her sweet gesture to Princess Diana, Kate also wore another touching tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth in the form of her necklace. The George VI Festoon Necklace was a gift from King George VI to his daughter Queen (then Princess) Elizabeth in 1950.

Sticking with tradition, Kate also wore Alexander McQueen for the occasion, who has become the Princess of Wales’ go to designer for momentous occasions. Designer Sarah Burton took over as creative director of the British fashion house in 2010, and made Kate’s wedding dress for her marriage to Prince William in 2011.

Since then, Kate has returned to the designer for important occasions, including her ivory dress for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The ivory silk crepe gown was created especially for the occasion, and features silver embroidered details that represent the four home nations in the form of an English Rose, Welsh daffodil, Scottish thistle and an Irish shamrock.

She completed her regal look with a bullion, crystal and silver thread work three-dimensional leaf embroidery headpiece that was created by a collaboration from Jess Collett and Alexander McQueen, and some white stiletto heels.

The dress wasn’t fully visible beneath Kate’s traditional regal royal blue Royal Victorian Order mantle edged in scarlet, however a glilmpse of it was seen as she arrived with Prince William and their children ahead of the procession.
