Time and time again Kate Winslet, 45, has proved she’s one of the most loveable British actress’ and her latest admission only adds to her case. The star recalled she how she stuffed herself in a car boot while filming HBO series Mare of Easttown, in order to support her co-star Angourie Rice through an “intimate” car sex scene.

I just got the sense that she was nervous

Rice, 20, plays her her on-screen daughter in the drama, and Kate revealed in a recent interview she voluntarily took on the role of intimacy coordinator to offer a reassuring hand.

Chatting to Samira Ahmed on the How I Found My Voice podcast, the Titanic star admitted Rice hadn’t been offered the advice from a professional for the scene because the characters remain clothed throughout.

She said: “Because there were no clothes that come off in the scene they didn’t consider bringing in an intimacy coordinator.

“And I just got the sense that she was nervous.”

And being able to read between the lines came as a huge relief for Rice, who thanked her.

Kate continued: “I said to her, ‘I’m going to be around for this, I’m going to stay, I won’t leave the set’.

“She said, ‘Thank god Kate, thank you so much.'”

But instead of lurking around in the background, Kate placed herself right at the centre of the drama.

“I ended up being in the car,” she exclaimed.

“I ended up being in the boot of the car.”

She added: “I knew it would make them feel better to have that one person who would be able to put their hand up and say, ‘Actually we need to cut now, is everyone feeling OK?'”

Speaking from her own first-hand experience of how daunting a scene like that can be to an actor, Kate admitted she didn’t have the luxury of an intimacy coordinator on set when she filmed a lesbian scene in 2019’s Ammonite.

“Sometimes even directors don’t feel comfortable communicating with actors about intimate scenes, even if it’s just kissing,” she shrugged.

“It’s interesting we didn’t have [intimacy coordinators] on Ammonite and I think it’s partly because at the time we made the film, it was 2019.

“Intimacy coordinators were only just slightly becoming a thing, they weren’t a legal requirement on film sets.”

But the actress remembered feeling comfortable around her co-star Saoirse Ronan, which helped her deliver the scene confidently without any help.

“Ammonite was truly a very low budget film, we didn’t have stunt doubles, hand doubles we barely even had a packed lunch.

“It wasn’t something that was ever offered to us. But Saoirse and I, we felt quite confident in what we wanted to do with the characters in those intimate scenes.

Kate continued: “I think the two of us together sort of looking after each other made us feel a bit better.”

But she wishes she had someone available to her on past shoots, saying she “could have done with that friend”.

“I definitely wish I had them in the past; I definitely do,” she longed.

“Just having a friend to say, ‘Can you ask him just to not put his hands there?’ So it’s not you having to say, which can be pretty awkward.”
