Katie McGlynn: Coronation Street actress talks lack of ‘decent’ Sinead Tinker storylines

Katie McGlynn, 26, recently revealed she would be leaving her role as Sinead Tinker in Coronation Street behind. The soap star opened up about her decision to exit the soap in a candid interview with this week’s OK! Magazine. While detailing her character’s traumatic predicament, in which she has been seen diagnosed with terminal cancer, Katie admitted she was “really pleased” about her final plot in the series. When quizzed about how she felt when she discovered Sinead’s cervical cancer would return, the actress said: “Selfishly, I was really pleased.

I hadn’t been given a decent story.

“Two years ago, I said I was going to leave Coronation Street because I hadn’t been given a decent story.

“Then I was told about the cervical cancer storyline so I said we should finish with the saddest ending because life’s not a fairytale.”

Addressing why the story means so much to her, Katie explained she had been affected by cancer in her family.

She added: “I’ve been affected by people in my family who had cancer and I wanted to showcase that. I think a soap should reflect real life.”

Detailing her mixed emotions over leaving the ITV programme, Katie continued: “I’m saddened that I’m leaving, but I want to create awareness.

“I’m so grateful for this storyline, it’s like a big spring board to jump off rather than leaving in a taxi.

“If I’m going to go, I want to go with a bang!”

Katie also spoke out about Sinead’s storyline in a post in view of her 209,000 Instagram followers yesterday.

Alongside emotional images of some of her final scenes on the show, she added the caption: “If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, do it.

“If there’s something you’ve always wanted to see, see it!

“None of us know what’s around the corner, but if Sinead’s storyline has taught me anything, it’s that life is too short and too precious to not do the things you want/love to do the most & spend time with the people you love the most!”

She also addressed her exit from the show in a tweet in view of her 80,900 followers last month, writing: “Sinead Tinker might be leaving Coronation Street, but I’ll carry a piece of her quirkinesses with me forever.”

Elsewhere, Katie shared a surprising health admission ahead of her appearance at the British Soap Awards 2019 back in June.

In view of her 80,900 Twitter followers, the soap favourite revealed she wasn’t eating any carbohydrates as she switched up her diet.

She tweeted: “Probably a bit late but I’ve decided to do the ‘actressy’ thing and have no carbs before the awards this weekend…it’s really fun so far,” followed by a rolling-eye emoji.

Katie concluded the post with the hashtags: “#day2 #nosleepforme #passmethecake.”

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
