Leo Sayers wife saved him from drowning after he lost it out at sea

Leo Sayer’s now wife rescued him from drowning in the sea.

The 1970s hitmaker has opened up about the time that his then-girlfriend, Donatella Piccinetti, 65, rescued him from disaster in 1984.

Speaking to The Mirror, the 75-year-old said: “I’ve never been able to swim and I’ve always been scared of water, so I had my flippers and snorkel and even baby water wings.

“We never did more than 20 minutes, but that morning I looked up and the island was tiny – we’d drifted out so far.”

He had recently split up from his first wife, Janice Lisseter, and had decided to go on holiday to the Seychelles with Donatella.

Leo said that while snorkelling, he went under the waves “about seven times” before his partner “fished” him out.

However, he also stated that after recusing him, she “kicked” him “because I was hanging on to her”.

The Show Must Go On singer then went on to say: “She’s a good swimmer and she managed to get us back to shore – but it took an hour.”

The recent revelation comes after it was announced that Leo and his girlfriend of 40 years had finally tied the knot.

37 years and two months after the former Celebrity Big Brother contestant popped the question, the pair were married earlier this year in an intimate ceremony.

Leo himself confirmed the marriage via his official Instagram account, sharing a picture of the pair’s rings with his 5,349 followers.

He wrote: “This past weekend was truly a dream…

“After being partners for almost 39 years, Donatella Piccinetti and Leo Sayer got married in their garden in the Southern Highlands on Saturday 15th of April.”

The caption continued to state that the pair had a “very private ceremony” and were joined by 40 of their nearest and dearest.

“The weather was sunny, the bride was radiant, the groom looked handsome and they couldn’t be happier with how the day went,” it concluded.

Regarding the marriage, Leo told the aforementioned publication: “We got to a point in our lives where we were happy; really settled, we had some money coming in and security, so we turned round to each other and said: ‘let’s do it’.”

He also said that at his age “you’re realising you’re not going to go anywhere else in life”.

Vowing to work until he is “at least 80 or 85”, the star, who has lived in Australia since 2009, said that “home is not just a place, it’s the person you’re with”.
