Mark Labbett: The Chase star slams bosses for ‘wasting time’ amid strop with Anne Hegerty

Chasers’ Road Trip: Mark Labbett swears at thought of camping

Mark Labbett, 55, has explained why he and his co-stars Anne Hegerty, 62, and Shaun Wallace, 60, were less than impressed when The Chasers Road Trip producers suggested they should sleep under the stars for a night. The Beast star revealed why the trio objected so strongly to the situation in a tweet after viewers tuned into the latest episode of The Chasers Road Trip: Trains, Brains and Automobiles this evening.

He shared his side of the story after Anne, also known as The Governess, took to Twitter to speak out on her self-confessed “diva strop” on the ITV show.

She wrote in view of her 148,000 followers: “#ChasersRoadTrip #TheChasersRoadTrip So, it’s quite possible that the campsite was actually extremely nice (I have since been told that it was).

“However, we had been promised a) a hotel, b) no more surprises.

“Ergo diva strop.”

Mark replied to Anne and addressed the fact that autistic people “hate being surprised”, which couldn’t have helped the quizzer’s reaction due to her Asperger’s diagnosis.

He explained: “And having been told that autistic people hate being surprised, the producers promptly wasted 90 minutes of our time springing this surprise…”

Mark also admitted he struggled to cope with the situation because he was starving at the time.

He added: “It was 6.30 pm and I got Hangry.”

Mark then penned in a follow-up tweet in view of his 139,000 followers: “For those who don’t like me that is your absolute privilege.

“I am a competitive egomaniac.

“I also absolutely will protect and support @anne_hegerty every time #chasersroadtrip.”

Mark and Anne’s comments came after the pair embarked on their travels with Shaun, known on The Chase as The Dark Destroyer, in the second instalment of their three-part series in an attempt to discover if they really are as smart as they think.

The episode saw the the three quizzers take on some clever children in a series of games.

After the trio were beaten by their young competitors, they were taken to a glamping site.

When their car arrived at the site, Mark refused to enter and opted to call his agent to object to the idea.

While chatting to his agent, Mark said: “Hi David, they are trying to spring camping on us in a farm. We don’t want to do this.

David replied: “Just make sure you use plenty of swear words so they can’t use the footage”, leading Mark to rant and demand to be “returned to civilisation”.

Mark and Anne then began chanting: “We shall, we shall not be moved.”

Shaun agreed and also urged their driver to turn the car around and head back.

The barrister said: “There’s no way I’m sleeping in a field, absolutely no chance.

“I’m a hotel geezer, fluffy pillows, running water, none of this glamping or clamping of whatever the trendy term they use for it is, I don’t do it.”
