Miley Cyrus Calls Her Relationship with Ex Liam Hemsworth a “Pacifier”

Yesterday, Miley Cyrus’s two hour-long guest appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast was released. There, she spoke candidly about the end of her relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.

“I recently just went through a very public divorce that fucking sucked,” she told Rogan. “What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore. That’s okay. I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and all those stories. … It’s just amazing to me that the public kind of thinks that there’s no gap of time that they didn’t see that could possibly be what led to this. Like, it’s not, ‘One day you were happy on the carpet, and the next day you were making out with your friend in Italy! What the fuck?’ Well, there was a lot of time in between that that you didn’t see.”

She also lamented the addictive cycle of their relationship. “Actually, I called the love of mine who I was with when we got divorced, it was almost like a pacifier,” she said. “It was that thing I just needed not because we were in love anymore but because [of] the comfort, and because my brain said, ‘Oh, this feels better. This is comforting.’ But actually, knowing that I was giving in to an addiction made me feel way worse. I had the hangover. Next day, okay, we sleep together, next day, I’m totally hungover. It felt like a relapse every time I’d go back.”

Cyrus also imparted some breakup wisdom. “What’s painful isn’t the relationship. It’s that when it’s done, you’re holding on for that extra however long you try to make it work—and it’s not working.”

She added that her experience as a child star working with directors who were unsure of their vision has contributed to her current standards in dating. “You better know what you want, because I’m just not interested in taking another 10 years like I did with my first love figuring that out,” she said.

Is there any hope of rekindling a fire between the couple? According to her, probably not. “Men in my life have told me I’m a cold fucking bitch, because I leave when things are done,” she said. “I’m really into a lot of freaky things, but I don’t fuck dead guys. And when it’s over, it’s over, and you’re dead to me and I move on.”

All things considered, Cyrus is happy to be on her own (she and boyfriend Cody Simpson recently ended their relationship after 10 months of dating).

“This is a super kind of pivotal moment for me right now,” she said, adding that she hasn’t been single for about five years. “Something I’m really excited about is this VMA performance. … And I love that. It’s the first time that I’m gonna be on that stage as a single, badass, grown, evolved, secure woman that’s done a lot of work. I’ve done the work.”
